There will be a battle of big cats in Death Valley when the LSU Tigers host the Auburn Tigers this weekend.
HISTORY: These two SEC schools have met in every season since 1988. LSU leads the all-time series 31-23-1.
Auburn Tigers
22)Auburn survived a scare last weekend at home. A big second quarter led to Georgia State taking a 24-9 lead into halftime. Auburn stepped up after the break, and came back to pick up the 34-24 victory.
Bo Nix had another ineffective start against GSU last weekend. After tossing for five touchdowns in the first two weeks, Nix has only completed 49% of his passes over the last two games. He’s struggled with strong defense, and that same trend might continue this weekend.
Jarquez Hunter and Tank Bigsby have split touches very well through the first month of the season. Bigsby led the team in rushing last season, and he’s got 403 yards on 65 carries and four touchdowns so far. Hunter has gained 382 yards on 36 carries.
Auburn’s offense is run-heavy, but Shedrick Jackson and Kobe Hudson are solid options on the outside. Hudson ha five catches for 76 yards in the win over Georgia State, while Jackson caught four passes for 70 yards, including a 21-yard touchdown score.
The Tigers struggled to defend Georgia State’s ground game early on, but they shut the Panthers out in the second half.
LSU Tigers
After dropping their season opener to UCLA in the Rose Bowl, LSU had won their last three games. They were successful in their SEC opener, taking down Mississippi State on the road, 28-25.
Ed O appears to have a stud in Max Johnson at quarterback. The heir apparent to Joe Burrow enjoyed a great month of September, and he capped it off with an impressive showing in Starksville. The sophomore signal caller went threw for 280 yards with four touchdowns to one interception, bringing his season totals to 1,144 passing yards, with 15 touchdowns to just three interceptions.
The days of LSU leaning on the ground game are over. Corey Kiner and Tyrion Davis-Price have split touches this season. Davis-Price rushed for 446 yards last season, and he’s gained 123 rushing yards on 40 carries so far this year.
Kayshon Boutte appears to be the next great LSU wide receiver. He’s been a nightmare for opponents so far this season. He caught four passes for 85 yards and two scores in win over Mississippi State last weekend, and he torched UCLA in the opener for nine catches, 148 yards, and three touchdowns.
The LSU defense held their ground against Mike Leach’s Air Raid attack, but they will have to bring their lunch pales this weekend to handle Auburns physicality.
Free Week 5 NCAA Football Pick
This battle of Tigers always puts out good football. This early in the season, you never know what can happen when pairing two non-Alabama SEC powers. Through the first four weeks LSU has done more on both sides of the ball, and when you throw in Death Valley, it feels like their the team to trust here.
4* Free Week 5 NCAA Betting Pick: LSU -3.5
Be aware of the field goal margin here, as this could be one of those closely contested SEC battles. We like what we’ve seen out of LSU so far this season, and after Auburn’s scare last week and their poor showing in Happy Valley, their trip to Death Valley could be even scarier. Max Johnson looks like a stud, while Bo Nix still doesn’t feel trustworthy after two full years of starting.
Take LSU’s spread confidently here, and take a look at the under, as it could be a physical, low-scoring bout.
