Black Knights vs. Owls Gameday
Week 4 continues Friday afternoon at Lincoln Financial Field, where Army visits Temple for a 4:00 PM ET kickoff on ESPN.
The Black Knights are 1-1 after having last weekend off. Army opened by hammering Bryant 59-3 before dropping a 28-24 decision to South Florida, so Friday will be its first road test of the season. The extra week gave the Black Knights plenty of time to stew over one that got away.
Army had an extra week to prepare; Temple probably needed one after Saturday’s overtime circus.
Temple is 1-2 after one of the wilder losses of Week 3. The Owls led Toledo 42-28 late in the fourth quarter, watched the Rockets force overtime and then lost 49-48 after going for two and the win.
Army has won four straight meetings in a series it leads 8-7 overall.
That includes a 14-13 victory last season and a 42-14 win in Philadelphia in 2024, giving Temple another shot at ending a run that has tilted toward the Black Knights.

Army Black Knights vs. Temple Owls Odds & Last 5
Army opened around -3.5 before the market tightened, with the Black Knights now sitting around -3 and roughly -158 on the moneyline.
Temple is approximately +132 straight-up, while the total has moved down from an opener around 51.5 into the 49.5 range. That’s a decent amount of movement for a matchup where Army’s style already tends to make every possession feel a little more expensive.
The Black Knights split their first two games, easily covering against Bryant before losing outright as a short favorite against South Florida. Both Army games have finished Over the closing total.
Temple has been considerably kinder to spread bettors. The Owls covered in all three games, beating Rhode Island 38-14, staying inside the number against Penn State and nearly winning outright as an underdog at Toledo.

Temple has scored 95 points through three games, but the offense has done most of its damage on the ground.
The Owls have rushed for at least 176 yards in every game, something the program hadn’t accomplished in its first three games of a season since 2011. They exploded for 261 rushing yards against Toledo, with Sam Brown producing 109 yards and three total touchdowns.
Temple has covered all three games, and its ground attack is giving opponents considerably more than expected.
Ajani Sheppard has completed 20 of 38 passes for 297 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Jaxon Smolik has added 116 yards and one score, although Sheppard handled almost all of the quarterback work against Toledo.
The defense has allowed 90 points, with 49 coming Saturday. Toledo threw for 429 yards and scored twice in the final 65 seconds of regulation, including the tying touchdown after recovering an onside kick.
That collapse wasn’t pretty.
Temple did force a fumble on Toledo’s opening offensive snap and recovered it, but avoiding another late defensive meltdown becomes rather important when Army is unlikely to give the Owls many possessions to waste.

Army’s identity remains about as subtle as a tank rolling through the front door.
The Black Knights have rushed for 789 yards through two games, averaging nearly 400 per contest. Zach Mundell and Godspower Nwawuihe have both cleared 140 rushing yards, while Cale Hellums remains another major part of an attack that forces defenses to account for the quarterback on every option look.
Army ran 51 times for 219 yards against South Florida but couldn’t turn that volume into enough points. The Black Knights led 17-14 at halftime before being outscored 14-7 after the break.
Hellums was efficient when Army went upstairs, completing 9 of 10 passes for 91 yards and two touchdowns.
The defense has surrendered only 31 points through two games. Bryant managed three before South Florida scored 28, although Army failed to create a turnover against the Bulls and possessed the ball for only 24:14.

Black Knights vs. Owls QB Matchup
Ajani Sheppard has emerged as Temple’s primary quarterback, completing 20 of 38 passes for 297 yards and three touchdowns without an interception.
He handled the bulk of the work at Toledo, throwing for 164 yards and three scores while adding 66 rushing yards. His 22-yard touchdown run answered Toledo’s overtime score before Temple unsuccessfully went for the two-point conversion and the win.
Jaxon Smolik has also appeared in all three games, completing 14 of 23 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown. His role was minimal against Toledo, where he attempted only one pass.
Neither offense needs huge passing numbers, but both quarterbacks have avoided giving opponents cheap possessions.
Cale Hellums directs an Army offense that naturally asks far more from his legs and decision-making in the option game than from his passing volume. He’s thrown for 150 yards and two touchdowns without an interception through two games.
Against South Florida, Hellums completed 9 of 10 throws and added 55 rushing yards on 18 carries.
That makes this an unusual quarterback comparison. Sheppard is operating behind a Temple rushing attack that just shredded Toledo, while Hellums is the trigger man for one of the country’s most committed ground games. Friday could be decided less by who throws for more yards and more by which quarterback keeps his offense out of obvious passing downs.
Army Black Knights vs. Temple Owls bottom line: Army will happily drain the afternoon one option pitch at a time, but Temple’s ground game has become good enough to make the Black Knights share the football.

Army’s option attack remains the obvious problem, and the Black Knights already have 789 rushing yards through two games. Still, South Florida held them to 24 points, and Army has had nearly two weeks to sit on that loss. Temple doesn’t need to dominate the line of scrimmage; it needs to keep Army from owning the clock.
Getting a field goal at home matters when Army is perfectly happy turning Friday into a grinder.
Temple has been much more dangerous on the ground than its passing totals suggest. Sam Brown just ran for 109 yards against Toledo, while Ajani Sheppard added 66 and a touchdown.
The Owls have also covered against Rhode Island, Penn State and Toledo, so this number isn’t asking them to suddenly become somebody else. Army won last year’s meeting 14-13, and another grinder suits the home dog.
