The Arkansas Razorbacks will travel to Arlington to take on the Texas A&M Aggies from AT&T Stadium in primetime this Saturday on ESPN. Texas A&M will open as the two-point favorites to win, with the total opening at 49.
HISTORY: The Texas A&M and Arkansas rivalry dates at the way back to their time as foes in the Southwest Conference. They met during every season from 1934 through 1991, with the Razorbacks gaining the upper hand until the Aggies would join the SEC. A&M has won nine of the first ten matchups since coming over from the Big 12 in 2012, but Arkansas was able to bring the streak last season with a victory in Arlington.
Arkansas Razorbacks
Arkansas has jumped out to a strong 3-0 start here in 2022. The Hogs opened their season with a strong non-conference victory over Cincinnati, then began SEC play with a 14-point victory over South Carolina. After the smooth start, the Razorbacks were put to the test last Saturday by a hungry FCS school.
Last weekend, Arkansas trailed entering the fourth quarter before avoiding the upset and defeating Missouri State, 38-27, failing to cover the spread for the first time this season.
KJ Jefferson is off to the Heisman-like start some of the country anticipated. After tossing for three touchdowns and adding a fourth on the ground in the win over Cinci, the junior quarterback completed 85.7% of his passes in the SEC opener against South Carolina and produced a pair of touchdowns. Jefferson’s effort was unexpected yet heroic last weekend in the scare against Mizzou State, passing for a personal best of 385 passing yards and two touchdowns.
Jefferson is up to 770 passing yards with six touchdowns to one interception on the season, while adding 169 rushing yards and scoring on the ground in all three games.
Raheim Sanders’ second year leap has been astounding. After gaining 499 yards last season, the sophomore back has eclipsed the 110-yard mark in each of the first three games. Sanders was really active against the Bears last weekend, rushing for a career-high 167 yards and two scores, while adding a 73-yard touchdown catch as well. He’s up to 440 yards on 6.7 yards per carry, with three rushing touchdowns for the season.
There’s been a collective effort to replace former Hog Treylon Burks’ presence at the wideout position. Toledo transfer Matt Landers leads the team in catches and yards after seven-catch, 123-yard performance against Missouri State. Former OU wideout Jadon Haselwood has been steady alongside him, catching 13 passes for 158 receiving yards and two touchdowns so far. Senior tight end Trey Knox had a big game against Cinci, scoring a pair of touchdowns.
Texas A&M Aggies
Texas A&M has jumped out to an uneasy start here in 2022. The opened the season with a shutout victory over FCS-power Sam Houston State, but they inexplicably lost at home to Appalachian State the following weekend. Jimbo Fisher’s team was able to rally and earn some of their stripes back with a timely performance in primetime.
Last week, Texas A&M defeated Miami at home, 17-9, covering their first spread of the 2022 season.
The Aggies haven’t looked sharp offensively through three games, but a switch at quarterback from Haynes King to Max Johnson was just enough last weekend. The numbers weren’t pretty for Johnson, a LSU transfer, but brought a sturdy, game managing presence against a skilled Canes defense. Johnson tossed a touchdown and protected the football against Miami, and he’ll look to build some momentum against a familar foe.
Devon Achane has handled all of the backfield work early for A&M. The junior back isn’t a bruiser, but he did wear Miami down with 18 carries, gaining 130 total yards along the way, including a 25-yard touchdown catch. Achane has gained 272 yards (196 rush, 56 rec) through the first three games.
While the Aggies haven’t been able to get much going through the air, they have a pair of reliable pass catchers in Ainias Smith and Evan Stewart. Smith has increased his totals in each of his first three seasons, and he got off to a monster start against Sam Houston, catching six passes for a career-high 164 yards and two scores.
Despite their falter against App State, the A&M defense remains as strong as advertised.

Dubbed the Southwest Classic back in 2009, Arkansas and Texas A&M have delivered a handful of classics over the years. A&M recent dominance of Arkansas has been impressive, but it’s the Hogs who come into this SEC bout in much better shape. There is such a clear advantage at quarterback, we’re going to ride with the visitors here because of it.
KJ Jefferson will be the best player on the field, and his backfield mate Raheim Sanders isn’t far off. A&M’s bland offense will have trouble keeping up if their defense can’t bail them out, and Jefferson will represent the best signal caller they’ve face this season. Look for him to lead the Hogs to a statement road victory here, and hand the Aggies their second loss of the season.
