The Alabama Crimson Tide will make the trip to Austin for one of the most anticipated early season matchups in recent memory, and take on the Texas Longhorns from DKR Stadium this Saturday. Alabama is favored to win by 20 on the road here, with the total opening at 65.5.
These two storied programs have met nine times, with the Longhorns owning a dominant 7-1-1 series lead. Alabama earn their first win in the last meeting, which happened to be the 2010 BCS Championship Game.
Alabama Crimson Tide
Alabama jumped out to dominant start in their season opener, crushing the Utah State Aggies and covering the massive 41-point spread, 55-0. This may be the biggest non-conference game in the Nick Saban era, so look for them to come out sharp in Austin.
Bryce Young followed up his Heisman campaign with strong six-touchdown performance against the Aggies. The reigning Maxwell Award winner threw for 195 passing yards and added another 100 yards on the ground, including a 63-yard touchdown run.
Young tossed five touchdowns, and connected with six different receivers in the opener. Traeshon Holden already seems to have a bigger role in his second season after leading the team with 70 yards and catching two scores in the opener. UGA transfer Jermaine Burton caught a pair of touchdowns as well in his first game with Bama.
Young led the team in rushing, but Georgia Tech transfer Jahmyr Gibbs paced the backfield with 98 yards on 10 touches. The dual-threat back racked up 1,216 total yards (746 rush, 470 rec), and caught 36 passes for the Yellow Jackets, and he has a good chance of featuring for Nick Saban this season.
Alabama held Utah State to just 136 yards of total offense, but expect a lot more fights from the Longhorns here.
Texas Longhorns
Texas opened the 2022 season with a strong win over Louisiana-Monroe. The Longhorns took a 28-3 lead into the locker room and didn’t look back, covering the massive 37-point spread along the way. Steve Sarkisian’s team was able to pick up some momentum on both sides of the ball, but they now face their stiffest test of the season.
The Quinn Ewers era began with a solid performance against ULM. The redshirt freshman threw for 225 passing yards and tossed a pair of touchdowns passes in three quarters of action, and he’ll have to grow fast when the Crimson Tide come to town.
The Longhorns remain strong in the backfield with Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson returning. It’s there third year splitting touches, and both backs have eclipsed the 1,500-yard mark for their career’s, with Robinson totaling 1,127 rushing yards last season. Johnson and Robinson both scored in the opener, with freshman Jonathan Brooks scoring his first career touchdown as well. Robinson gained 111 yards from scrimmage and even brought in a touchdown catch.
Ewers found a connection with fellow first-year player Ja’Tavion Sanders. The 6’4 tight end is going to be a mismatch and force at the position this year, and he led Texas with six catches for 85 yards against the Warhawks, including a 19-yard touchdown. 2021 leading receivers Xavier Worthy and Jordan Whittingham start on the outside again this season.
