Crimson Tide vs. Bulldogs Gameday
No. 7 Alabama heads to Starkville for a top-20 SEC showdown with No. 16 Mississippi State at Davis Wade Stadium. Both teams are 4-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play, with kickoff set for noon ET on ABC.
Both arrive after impressive SEC wins.
Alabama hammered South Carolina 49-18 last week behind another big performance from Keelon Russell. Mississippi State had to work considerably harder, erasing a fourth-quarter deficit and scoring the final 14 points to beat previously unbeaten Missouri 31-24.
Mississippi State has earned its ranking, but Alabama brings a considerably different kind of problem to Starkville.
The Bulldogs are unbeaten at home and already own a ranked victory at Davis Wade Stadium. Alabama has won all four games and now gets its second road test of the season.
Mississippi State has put itself squarely in the SEC conversation. Saturday gives the Bulldogs a chance to prove they belong there against one of the deepest rosters they’ll see all season.

Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Mississippi State Bulldogs Odds & Last 5
The opening odds have Alabama favored on the road. The Crimson Tide are -222 on the moneyline, Mississippi State is +183, and Alabama is laying 6 points.
The total is 60.5, so bookmakers aren’t exactly expecting a Saturday morning rock fight.
Alabama has scored at least 45 points in each of its first four games. The Tide put up 49 last week after beating Florida State 50-36 the week before.
Mississippi State has topped 30 points in every game.
The Bulldogs followed a 41-34 road win at South Carolina with their 31-24 victory over Missouri. That gives them consecutive SEC wins entering their biggest test of the season.
History is considerably less encouraging for Mississippi State. Alabama has won 16 consecutive meetings, including a 40-17 victory in Starkville when these programs last met in 2023.

Bulldogs Stats
Mississippi State has been much more than a nice early-season story. The Bulldogs have scored 172 points through four games and have been able to produce through the air without abandoning the running game.
Fluff Bothwell has given them legitimate balance.
Bothwell has rushed for 402 yards and 3 TD’s this season. He ran for 122 yards against Missouri, his third straight 100-yard performance, and has become an important part of keeping defenses from loading up against the passing attack.
Anthony Evans III gives Mississippi State another dangerous piece.
Evans finished with 114 receiving yards against Missouri, helping the Bulldogs stretch the field while Bothwell handled the work underneath and on the ground. That’s the kind of balance Mississippi State will need against Alabama.
The Bulldogs also showed some backbone last week.
Mississippi State entered the fourth quarter trailing Missouri 24-17 before scoring two unanswered TD’s. It was the Bulldogs’ first home victory in a top-25 matchup since 2014.
Crimson Tide Stats
Alabama’s offense is coming off its best performance of the season.
The Crimson Tide piled up 489 yards against South Carolina and produced eight plays of at least 20 yards. Alabama scored 35 points before halftime and turned the game into a rout before the Gamecocks had much chance to settle in.
Ryan Coleman-Williams caught five passes for 98 yards and 2 TD’s last week.
The Tide also have multiple options on the ground. Daniel Hill has rushed for 225 yards and 4 TD’s through four games, while EJ Crowell led Alabama in rushing against South Carolina.
Alabama’s defense has been creating problems of its own.
The Tide have forced nine turnovers through four games, including six interceptions. Three of those picks have been returned for TD’s, giving Alabama a defense capable of changing the scoreboard without waiting for the offense.
Mississippi State can move the football, but giving Alabama extra possessions is a quick way to wreck a Saturday.
That ability to steal points changes the margin for error in this matchup. Mississippi State has taken good care of the football behind Taylor, and keeping it that way becomes even more important Saturday.
Crimson Tide vs. Bulldogs QB Matchup
Kamario Taylor has quickly become one of the biggest stories in the SEC.
The Mississippi State QB has thrown for 1,192 yards with 14 TD’s and only 2 interceptions through four games. He can also create with his legs when protection breaks down, which gives Alabama something else to account for.
Last week was his biggest test yet.
Taylor threw for 360 yards and 3 TD’s against Missouri, helping Mississippi State erase a seven-point fourth-quarter deficit. His ability to push the football downfield has changed what this Bulldogs offense can ask defenses to cover.
Keelon Russell has been pretty impressive himself.
The Alabama QB has completed 78 of 110 passes for 1,129 yards with 8 TD’s and 2 interceptions. Russell has added 168 rushing yards and 3 TD’s, giving the Tide another option once a play gets outside its original structure.
His performance against South Carolina was his best yet.
Russell completed 21 of 27 passes for 365 yards and 4 TD’s, then added 35 rushing yards and another score. He finished with 400 yards of total offense while directing Alabama’s biggest offensive performance of the season.

Taylor has been remarkably efficient, but this is a different defensive assignment.
Alabama can pressure the QB and has already shown what happens when opponents get careless with the football. Taylor doesn’t need to be perfect, but the Bulldogs can’t afford the kind of mistake that gives Alabama points without Russell even taking the field.
Russell faces pressure of a different kind.
Davis Wade should be rocking, and Mississippi State has already shown it can win a tight fourth-quarter SEC game. Russell will have to handle the environment and avoid giving the Bulldogs the short fields that could keep this close deep into the afternoon.
Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Mississippi State Bulldogs bottom line: Mississippi State has enough balance to test Alabama, but Russell and the Tide defense give the favorite more ways to change this game quickly.
Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Mississippi State Bulldogs Football Betting Trends
- Alabama is 24-6 straight up in all games over the last 30 games.
- Also, the Crimson Tide is 14-6 against the spread as favorites in their last 20 games.
- Alabama has gone over the total in all 4 games this season.
- Mississippi State is 4-0 against the spread in all games this season.
- Plus, the Bulldogs are 3-0 straight up after a win in their last 3 games.
- Mississippi State has gone over the total in 22 of their last 30 home games.
Crimson Tide Bulldogs Free Pick: Alabama -6
Here is my Crimson Tide Bulldogs free pick: I’m laying it with Alabama -6. Mississippi State is 4-0, ranked and playing at home, so I’m not treating the Bulldogs like some cute little September story. I simply think Alabama has too many ways to make them uncomfortable.
Mississippi State wants balance, and Kamario Taylor has been excellent when the Bulldogs can keep their entire offense available. Alabama’s front can change that equation. If the Tide make Fluff Bothwell work for his yards and start putting Taylor in obvious passing situations, this gets considerably tougher.
Mississippi State can absolutely make Alabama sweat, but hanging around and beating the Tide are two different jobs.
The other problem is Alabama doesn’t need to dominate possession to create separation. The Tide can flip the field quickly, strike from distance and turn one Mississippi State mistake into a scoreboard problem before the cowbells have stopped ringing.
I expect the Bulldogs to give Alabama a game, especially early. But over four quarters, I trust the Tide more on both sides of the ball, and six isn’t enough to scare me away. Give me Alabama -6.
