Two teams that fell just short of the CFP this season will meet up in the Cotton Bowl as the Oklahoma Sooners will take on the Florida Gators on Wednesday, December 30th.
The Sooners finished their regular season on a seven-game winning streak and even captured the Big-12 title in the process, while the Gators finished 8-3 ending the season on a two-game losing streak.
Florida Gators
After losing to LSU to end their regular season the Gators lost all hope of a CFP appearance in 2020. Florida did almost upset the #1 team in the country in Alabama in the SEC championship game but ultimately couldn’t get a key stop down the line when they needed it. They have allowed 28.6 points per game this season and have given up 80 total points in the last two games.
Heisman Trophy finalist Kyle Trask will give one last showing to the committee on why he should be the winner of the trophy against the Sooners. He racked up 4125 passing yards to go with 43 touchdowns and five interceptions in 11 games this season. He also rushed for 50 yards and three touchdowns this year.
Florida will be without college football’s top tight-end prospect in Kyle Pitts in this game as he has opted out for the NFL draft. That is going to be a huge loss for the Gator’s offense as he is Trask’s security blanket. WR Kadarius Toney is going to have a lot riding on his shoulders with Pitts out. Toney gathered over 1000 yards this season to lead Florida and had 10 touchdowns this season.
Oklahoma Sooners
#6 Oklahoma arguably has more momentum than Florida heading into this game. The Sooners entered the year as favorites to win the Big 12 and ranked #4 in the country, but early losses to Kansas State and Iowa State quickly knocked them out of the driver’s seat. They did not stagger though and did end capturing the Big-12 title, but did not catch the lucky breaks they needed to slide back into the CFP.
Redshirt freshman Spencer Rattler was impressive, to say the least in his first season with the reigns to the Sooners offense. He leads an explosive Oklahoma offense that is averaging 41.8 points per contest which 9th in the country. The freshman completed 68% of passes for 2784 passing yards to go with a 25 TD: 7 INT ratio this season. He also has 120 yards on the ground for five scores.
Sooners will be without one of their leading rushers in this game as T.J. Pledger announced he was transferring from the team this following season. He amassed over 500 yards from scrimmage this season and was second on the team in touchdowns with five this season.
Since struggling early on defensively, the Sooners have locked down since the first three games. Overall, Oklahoma has surrendered 21.9 points per game which is ranked 31st in the FBS, but since week three they are allowing opponents to score just 16.5 points per game.

Free Goodyear Cotton Bowl NCAA Football Pick:
I like Oklahoma to cover the first-half spread. The Sooners should come out the gate fast after falling to an SEC team the last two years in the CFP. Lincoln Riley is going to want to show that his team can hang with the likes of the SEC and start out hot. The Sooners have a +17.2 first-half point differential and Rattler runs a ton of scripted plays early.
