The Pac-12 Champion Oregon Ducks will be matched up with the Iowa State Cyclones on January, 2nd in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl. The Cyclones came up just short of a comeback against Oklahoma in the Big-12 title game and ultimately lost 27-21. The Ducks took care of business against USC in the Pac-12 title game in their last contest to win the Pac-12 for the second consecutive year.
Oregon Ducks
Oregon somehow stumbled their way into the Pac-12 Championship after Washington had to bow out due to COVID. After beating USC in the title the Ducks were rewarded a bowl game and now will take on Iowa State to close out their 2020 season.
The Ducks enter this contest 44th in the nation in passing offense with an average of 249.5 yards per contest through the air on the year. Oregon is 51st in the country in rushing offense as they put up 180.2 yards per game on the ground. The Ducks are 31st among the 127 FBS teams that have played in scoring with an average of 33.7 points per contest. They have just a -1.5 point differential from last season with the fifth overall pick at the helm a season ago.
Replacing Justin Herbert would be a difficult task in any year and with a shortened one it has been even harder for Mario Cristobal but it seems like the offense hasn’t missed a beat. Tyler Shough is 99 of 158 passing for 1,480 yards with 13 touchdowns and five interceptions while ranking third in the Pac-12 with 263 yards plus two scores on the ground.
CJ Verdell is the lead back for the Ducks with 65 carries for 285 yards plus three scores, however, he announced that he is going to sit out of the game to decide his future. Travis Dye is technically the backup but leads the Ducks in yards with 391 this season. Dye is averaging 7.0 yards per carry which led the Pac-12 this season among backs with at least 50 carries this season.
Defensively, the Ducks are led by All-American DE Kayvon Thibodeaux. Thibodeaux leads the Pac-12 in sacks with 7.5 this season. He will most likely be the top defensive end picked in next year’s draft and he has yet to announce whether or not he will play in this game so be on the lookout for that. Oregon is surrendering 27.3 points per game which ranks 56th out of 127 teams in the FBS. They are allowing 249.7 passing yards per game and 159.8 rushing yards per game.
Iowa State Cyclones
Iowa State had won five straight games but ended up falling short as the Sooners avenged their early-season loss in Ames by winning the Big 12 Championship. The Cyclones now look to regroup and finish the season with a bowl victory.
The Cyclones are 45th in the nation in passing offense as they average 249.1 yards per game through the air and 39th in rushing offense with 192 yards on the ground per contest. Iowa State is 37th in the FBS in scoring with 32.8 points per contest.
Brock Purdy had his struggles to start the season but has had a lot of success as of late. Over his last four games, he has thrown for eight touchdowns and just three interceptions. All three of those interceptions came against Oklahoma in the Big-12 Championship game. Purdy has hit 223 of 336 passes for 2,594 yards with 18 touchdowns and nine interceptions this season: he is second on the team with 343 rushing yards and has found the end zone four times.
Freshman RB Breece Hall has emerged as the lead back for the Cyclones as he has run the ball 245 times for 1,436 yards with 19 touchdowns this season.
On defense, the Cyclones rank 31st in the FBS. They allow 21.8 points per game and surrender 444.1 total yards per game.

Free PlayStation Fiesta Bowl NCAA Football Pick:
I think the Iowa State defense will be able to contain the Duck’s offense and they should be motivated after coming up just a hair short in the Big-12 championship game.
