2008 NFL PreSeason Analysis – 2008 Browns Football Gambling
Overview
The Cleveland Browns have been the NFL loveable loser for many years. That changed last year after Derek Anderson emerged as a franchise quarterback. Anderson tied everything together for the Browns, which meant they finally had a respectable offense.
They’ve spent the offseason making big trades and adding free agents, indicating that are ready to compete now. Expectations are high…but they still are the Browns.
Offense
The Browns offense really grew up last year and although a few guys get the credit, it was really a team effort. Anderson emerged, the offensive line was finally reliable, Jamal Lewis provided a running game and Braylon Edwards played to his potential.

The good news is that all of these parts are back and the Browns have excellent team chemistry on offense.
Not a lot of changes needed to be made in the offseason but one area of weakness that the Browns address was their No. 2 wide receiver position. They threw a lot of money at Donte Stallworth, who is off of two disappointing seasons.

Stallworth has a lot of speed and potential but has never developed into anything special. Along with Joe Jurevicius, this rotation would have been solid but with Jurevicius out, they will have to rely on Stallworth a lot more.
Defense
The Browns defense was brutal last year and they made a number of key changes in the offseason to amend that.
They traded for Green Bay Packers end Corey Williams and Detroit Lions Pro Bowl tackle Shaun Rogers. These players are both solid, all-star caliber players, but the problem is that they are in a different defensive scheme now.
Both were impact players in the 4-3 but their roles in the 3-4 are drastically different. They won’t make the same impact, which means that the Browns might have wasted draft picks and money on two players who won’t fit their plans.
Linebacker is somewhat of a strength as the team has some good tacklers in the middle in Andra Davis, Leon Williams and D’Qwell Jackson. But on the outside, Willie McGinest has faded leaving Kamerion Wimbley as the only real pass rush threat. As a team, the Browns had 28 sacks and Wimbley had five of them.
The secondary has been a weak point and will continue as such this year. Eric Wright, Brandon McDonald and Terry Cousin are a fairly weak trio. The safeties, Sean Jones and Brodney Pool, are underrated, though.
Regular Season Win Total: 8
The Browns are a good team but not a playoff team in the AFC. They beat up a lot of cream puffs last year. Seven of their games – against Oakland, Baltimore twice, Miami, St .Louis, New York Jets and San Francisco – were against teams that combined to finish 27-85. The Browns schedule is brutal, to start. They open with Dallas and Pittsburgh at home, then head to Baltimore and Cincinnati. That’s not a simple first four weeks. They also have road trips to Washington, Jacksonville, Tennessee and Philadelphia.
Eight wins would be phenomenal with this schedule.
