The following is a breakdown of all the odds as well as a couple of insider tips as to which team should come out on top in each of the four.
AFC East
Buffalo Bills +1300
Miami Dolphins +450
New England Patriots -400
New York Jets +1500
The Patriots recent issues with their passing game especially at the tight end position could keep them from running away with things in this division but 10 or more victories should be enough to claim the title. Miami has a great shot at improving on its 7-9 record from last season if second-year quarterback Ryan Tannehill continues to develop.
Buffalo’s defense remains the strength of this team, but it will experience some growing pains with first-round pick EJ Manual as its starting quarterback. The Jets have enough issues at quarterback to make matching last season’s six wins a tough task.
AFC South
Houston Texans -250
Indianapolis Colts +240
Jacksonville Jaguars +3000
Tennessee Titans +1200
Houston appears to once again be the class of this division, but it only won last year’s title by a game after struggling down the stretch to finish 12-4. I would not necessarily bet against the Texans, but do not forget about the Colts. While many experts may be looking for quarterback Andrew Luck to take a step backwards this season, but that may not be the case.
Both Tennessee and Jacksonville would need some pretty amazing things to quickly come together to be a factor in this race as both come into the new season with plenty of question marks on both sides of the ball. [soliloquy id=”82219″]
AFC North
Baltimore Ravens +220
Cincinnati Bengals +200
Cleveland Browns +650
Pittsburgh Steelers +200
This will easily be the tightest race in the AFC this season with three of the four teams having a legitimate shot at claiming the title. Baltimore might be the biggest reach given the amount of change that the Super Bowl champ’s roster has undergone.
Pittsburgh has some major holes to fill on its once vaunted defense which should open the door for Cincinnati to move from wildcard contender to division champ. The Bengals are the most balanced team in this division and they could be downright explosive on offense. Cleveland might be able to eclipse last season’s five wins, but the gap with the other three teams in the North is still pretty wide.
AFC West
Denver Broncos -600
Kansas City Chiefs +800
Oakland Raiders +2200
San Diego Chargers +750
Denver is a prohibitive favorite to win its third-straight division title and for good reason. Peyton Manning looked like he was just warming-up in this offense in 2012 and the Broncos have one of the best defenses in the league.
Kansas City, under new head coach could be a force in a few years but not this one and San Diego is almost back in a rebuilding mode. Oakland took a major step backwards last season with just four wins after appearing to have turned the corner in 2011.
