The Navy Midshipmen have been almost unstoppable on the ground this season, relying on a triple-option rushing attack and quarterback Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada’s accurate reading of defenses when making the decision of which option to use on any particular play. The Navy ground attack averages more yards per game than any other program in the nation. It is predicated upon whatever look the defense throws at the offense. If the defense comes in upfield, the ball goes to FB Adam Ballard, who is powerful and can run well between the tackles.

If the defensive ends collapse to the inside, Kaheaku-Enhada will keep the ball and try to hit the perimeter. When the defense has its linebackers and safeties float outside, it creates a seam for Kaheaku-Enhada, who has very good speed and won’t hesitate to take off downfield. When the defense comes inside instead, Kaheaku-Enhada can pitch the ball to either of his slot backs, Reggie Campbell or Zerb Singleton, both of whom have good hands and can create big plays if they are given some space to work with. It won’t hurt that nose tackle Gabe Long of the Utes has a separated shoulder and may not be able to play in this game.

There has only been one game this year where Kaheaku-Enhada has attempted more than ten pass attempts. That fact presents a very unique set of challenges for the pass defense of Utah, which ranks among the tops in the nation. They have yet to face an opponent so dedicated to the run game as these Midshipmen are. It will also be of no benefit to Utah that San Diego, where the game is being played, is home to a naval base, meaning the neutrality of the site is actually only in theory.
The Midshipmen can stay within range of the Utes if they can force their mistake-prone quarterback into committing a couple of turnovers and control the clock with their offense.
