2008 NFL PreSeason Analysis – 2008 Bengals Football Gambling
After winning 11 games in 2005, the Cincinnati Bengals have been nothing short of disappointing over the past two seasons. Head coach Marvin Lewis is on the hot seat after his team produced a discouraging finish to the 2007 season.
The Bengals have never been short on potential but Lewis has to figure out a way to get the team to execute. If not, this will be his last season coaching the team.
On talent alone, the Bengals are among the best offenses in the NFL betting but when a slew of injuries arose last year, they didn’t have the depth to handle the matter.
The running back position was a weekly bandaid as Rudi Johnson, Chris Perry and Kenny Irons all missed parts of last season. The offensive line was frequently beaten up, too, which didn’t help matters.
If those two areas are healthy, and all signs point to that so far this season, the Bengals offense should get back on track. With Chad Johnson reporting to camp, you can expect a monster season from him. He seems to thrive in the drama and alongside T.J. Houshmanzadeh, the Bengals have one of the best one-two punches.

Rudi Johnson has to bounce back healthy and run effectively to make this offense work. At least Perry should join him this season and if the 29-year-old Johnson is sharing the load, he’ll be good for another 1000-yard season.
Carson Palmer is one of the best quarterbacks in the game and he ties everything in this offense together. They will be a top-10 unit if healthy.
The defense – the area that former defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis was supposed to improve – appears to have the best roster it has fielded in years.
The Bengals finally have a good rotation at defensive tackle, which has helped slow opposing rushing attacks, and they may have made an upgrade at defensive end. The Bengals lost former first-round pick Justin Smith to free agency but replaced him with Antwan Odom, who had eight sacks for the Tennessee Titans last year. With Odom and Robert Geathers, the Bengals should generate decent pressure.
The Bengals added first-round pick Keith Rivers to an already crowded group of young linebackers. With Rashad Jeanty, Ahmad Brooks and Rivers, the Bengals have a decent trio. Now if they can just stay healthy and not test the injury depths like the linebacking corps did last year.
With two former first-round picks starting at cornerback (Johnathan Joseph and Leon Hall) and another veteran for depth (Deltha O’Neal), the Bengals should have the talent in the secondary.
All the pieces are in place for Lewis and now he has to infuse confidence into this defense. They haven’t played consistently in years but everything could come together this year.
Regular Season Win Total 7.5
The Cincinnati Bengals might be the second-best team in the division behind the Pittsburgh Steelers if their defense does emerge. They are relatively under the radar, mostly because a slew of injuries landed them at 7-9 last year. But if the defense steps up and the offense can find its familiar groove, the Bengals could be a playoff team.
The lone caveat is that with Chad Johnson in the locker room and Marvin Lewis on the hot seat, a couple of early losses could sour the situation and compound some negativity.
