Allstate 400 at the Brickyard
The drivers of the Nextel Cup Series will get a taste of Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday afternoon when the famous track hosts the 2007 Allstate 400 at the Brickyard.
Tony Stewart won this event in ’05, and he’s coming off a victory in the USG Sheetrock 400 at Chicagoland Speedway on July 15. Matt Kenseth, Carl Edwards, Kevin Harvick, and Casey Mears rounded out the Top 5 at Chicagoland. Kurt Busch, Jeff Burton, Ryan Newman, Jeff Gordon, and Clint Bowyer picked up Top-10 results in that race as well.
Kyle Busch was 13th, Denny Hamlin was 17th, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. was 19th at Chicagoland. Jimmie Johnson hit the wall and ended up in 37th place on the day, Jamie McMurray finished back in 38th, and engine trouble put Martin Truex Jr. in 39th.
Gordon’s lead atop the driver standings is now up to 303 points on Hamlin. Kenseth, Burton, Edwards, Stewart, Johnson, Harvick, Kyle Busch, Bowyer, Truex Jr., and Earnhardt Jr. make up the rest of the current Top 12. Newman is 30 points back of Dale Jr. in 13th place right now, while Kurt Busch is in 14th place, and McMurray sits in 15th.
Johnson is the defending Allstate 400 at the Brickyard champion, and he’ll be looking to perform well at Indianapolis again this year and move back up the driver standings. Gordon has four career Nextel Cup Series victories on that track (2004, 2001, 1998, and 1994). Harvick won the Brickyard 400 back in ’03, and Bobby Labonte won in 2000.
Bowyer has the best driver average at Indy (4.0), but he only competed on the track for the first time in 2006. Harvick has an average finishing position of 7.8 on the track through six events, while Gordon has an average finishing position of 8.1 since 1998.
Other top driver averages for Indianapolis Motor Speedway include Stewart (8.4), Kyle Busch (8.5 in two races), Hamlin (10.0 in one race), Edwards (10.5 in two races), McMurray (13.3), Kenseth (13.7), and Kurt Busch (15.5). Earnhardt Jr. has a driver average of just 19.3 over seven races, while Johnson is back at 20.4 in his five events.
