NFL Previews – 2013 NFC West Betting

With the start of NFL training camps right around the corner, it is the perfect time to dig a bit deeper into Bovada’s NFL futures odds including the ones for a team’s chances to win its division. This time around we will focus-in on the NFC West.

Odds from Bovada

NFC West Team Pages

San Francisco 49ers -120

The 49ers remain the class of the division after making two-straight trips to the NFC Championship and last season’s Super Bowl, but the gap between them and Seattle may not be as wide as these odds suggest. They should remain the front-runner all season long; however this race could drag on until Week 17.

The emergence of Colin Kaepernick as a legitimate franchise quarterback makes San Francisco the favorite, but he will be tested in his first full season as a starter. The addition of wide receiver Anquan Boldin certainly adds to his already impressive arsenal of offensive weapons, but the loss of Michael Crabtree due to injury more than negates this edge.

Seattle Seahawks +120

Seattle kept pace with the 49ers in last year’s NFC West title race; finishing just a half game back at 11-5. It went on to beat Washington on the road in the Wildcard Round of the playoffs before falling to Atlanta by two points in the Divisional Round. With a few key free agent acquisitions and a strong draft, many experts see this team taking the next big step in 2013. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Balance has been to key to the Seahawks’ success with an offense that was ranked ninth in the NFL last season in scoring complementing the league’s No.1-ranked defense in points allowed. Third-round pick Russell Wilson proved to be a steal at quarterback and Marshawn Lynch paced a rushing attack that averaged 161.2 yards a game.

St. Louis Rams +750

Ever since the Rams went 1-15 in 2009 they have been quietly collecting pieces to the puzzle starting with quarterback Sam Bradford. A 7-8-1 record in 2012 has fueled optimism that this team is poised for a breakout season. This could be tough to do with two strong teams ahead of it in the division, but St. Louis has put itself in good position to at the very least make a run at the playoffs.

The addition of offensive tackle Jake Long from Miami as a free agent shores up the line and first round pick Tavon Austin at wide receiver gives Bradford a legitimate playmaker the team had been lacking in the past. Also look for third round pick Stedman Bailey to have an immediate impact on the passing game. He played opposite Austin for three seasons at West Virginia

Arizona Cardinals +2200

Arizona has the unenviable task of playing in suddenly one of the toughest divisions in the NFL after not that long ago an 8-8 record was good enough to win the NFC West. The Cardinals have been treading water the past three seasons and after going 8-8 in 2011 they slipped back to 5-11 last season. Bruce Arians steps in as the team’s new head coach after a very successful season as interim coach at Indianapolis, but he certainly has his work cut out for him in turning things around in the dessert.

One of his first moves was to trade for Carson Palmer to give Arizona a veteran presence at quarterback. He also added linebacker Karlos Dansby and cornerback Antoine Cason to address some holes on the defensive side of the ball. The Cardinals appear destined to occupy the basement of the division at least one more season, but they should be much more competitive in 2013.
