American Athletic Conference Info
Here is some more info about the AAC Football Conference:
AAC Football Conference History
The American Athletic Football Conference (AAC) was formed in 2013 as a result of the restructuring of the Big East Conference. The conference was originally established as a football-only conference, but expanded to include other sports. The AAC is composed of 11 members, including Cincinnati, UCF, Memphis, and Houston, among others.
The conference has experienced success on the national stage, with several teams earning bowl game victories and national rankings. In 2015, the conference had a representative in the College Football Playoff for the first time, when the Houston Cougars earned a spot in the Peach Bowl.
The AAC has also seen coaching talent come through the ranks, such as Scott Frost who led UCF to an undefeated season in 2017 before moving on to Nebraska. Overall, the AAC has quickly established itself as a competitive and respected conference in college football.
American Football Conference – Big Games
- UCF vs. USF: This rivalry between the University of Central Florida (UCF) and the University of South Florida (USF) is known as the “War on I-4” and takes its name from the interstate highway that connects the two schools. The rivalry started in 2013 and has quickly become one of the most heated in the conference. Both teams have had success on the field, with UCF winning the AAC Championship in 2017 and 2018, and USF finishing as conference runners-up in 2015 and 2017.
- Cincinnati vs. Memphis: This rivalry between the University of Cincinnati and the University of Memphis has intensified in recent years due to both teams’ success on the field. The teams have played each other in the AAC Championship Game twice in the past three years, with Memphis winning in 2019 and Cincinnati winning in 2020. The rivalry also has a bit of history, as the teams used to compete in Conference USA before both schools joined the AAC.
- Houston vs. SMU: This rivalry between the University of Houston and Southern Methodist University (SMU) is known as the “Bayou Bucket Classic.” The teams first played each other in 1949 and have been playing on and off ever since. The rivalry became more intense when both teams joined the AAC in 2013. Both teams have had success in the conference, with Houston winning the AAC Championship in 2015 and SMU finishing as conference runners-up in 2019. The winner of the annual game takes home the “Bayou Bucket” trophy, which is a replica of an old oil derrick.
AAC Football Conference Fan Bases
University of Central Florida (UCF) Knights: UCF has a passionate fan base known as the “Knight Nation” who are known for their loud and boisterous support of their football team. The tradition of the UCF “Charge On” chant is also well-known throughout college football.

Tulane University: Although not one of the most successful teams in the AAC in recent years, the Tulane Green Wave have a dedicated following with a unique tradition. Before each home game, the team and fans gather on a nearby street to participate in the “Wave Walk,” where they walk together to the stadium while the band plays and fans cheer.
