At the very least Vancouver comes into Friday night’s game with momentum, rolling hard after a 5-1 win over the Flames on Wednesday night. That was just the 2nd win in the last 9 games for the Canucks though.
Oddsmakers are calling this an old fashioned toss-up game with both teams listed at -110. That kind of gives the Jets a lean since Vancouver can’t even get favored on their own ice. Winnipeg is just 2-3 over their last 5 though.
Winnipeg had been pretty dominant in this head to head series, rattling off 9 straight over Vancouver until a 4-1 Canucks win on January 30th. Do you take the recent success or the storied history?
One thing you do like about the Jets is that they can light the lamp at any given time. Winnipeg ranks 8th in the NHL putting up 3.4 goals/game, boasting a +9 goal differential and 19 points on the season.
Of course the Jets managed just a single goal in the meeting with Vancouver at the end of January. Winnipeg managed just 24 SOG, while Vancouver pelted the pipes with 39 SOG.
Connor Hellebuyck is responsible for that 4-1 loss to the Canucks last month, only allowing 3 of the scores though and on 38 shots. Hellebuyck can’t get a break facing 40+ shots in two of the last four.
Vancouver just needs to do what they did in the first matchup, led by Brock Boeser who scored 2 goals on 7 shots against Hellebuyck. Four different players had helpers in that meeting earlier this season so it was a team win.
The Canucks not only have a win in hand, they have a 5-3-1 home record while the Jets are just 3-3 on the season. Vancouver is middle of the pack (15th) netting 2.9 scores/ game, but their defense is atrocious.
Travis Green’s squad has dipped to dead last in the NHL in goals against, allowing 3.7 scores per. That’s really hard to back a team on a -110 coin flip with that ranking. The Canucks also allow 30+ shots on goal per game.
Thatcher Demko got the nod in the first game against Winnipeg as it was the start of a six game road trip. Demko has gotten more starts than Braden Holtby over the last five games, although the former Washington goaltender stopped 35 of 36 Flames shots on Wednesday.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Jets are 1-4 last 5 Friday games
- Under is 5-1-1 in Jets last 7 overall
- Canucks are 2-7 last 9 overall
- Under is 4-1-1 in Canucks last 6 overall
- Jets are 14-2 last 16 head to head meetings
- Under is 4-0 last 4 head to head meetings
Free Winnipeg Jets vs. Vancouver Canucks NHL Prediction:
This is a tough one and oddsmakers aren’t giving any leans setting both squads at -110. Do we go with the recent dominance of Vancouver in the 4-1 win this season, or the overall greatness of Winnipeg winning 14 of the last 16.
Ultimately Vancouver is decent at home, and if Holtby goes he looked good last time out against Calgary. If it’s Demko, he’s already put the screws to Winnipeg once this season.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Vancouver -110
Nobody would blame you for a wager on the Jets either with that recent dominance in this series.
