These two teams are coming into this game off of wins on Monday night. Winnipeg beat the high flying and red hot Rangers 4-1 in New York, while the Islanders came roaring back vs the Penguins to win 4-2 in Pittsburgh.
The Jets and Islanders haven’t played each other in almost a year with the Islanders taking that game 5-2 on March 11th.
Winnipeg Jets
Winnipeg comes into this game on a high note after ending their mini 2 game losing streak. The Jets went into Madison Square Garden as big underdogs but got an out of this world performance from Connor Hellebuyck, making 50 saves on 51 shots.
Offense
The Offence of the Jets are pretty much mediocre as it can be they sit 17th in goals, and 17th on the power play. A big reason to the Jets middle of the pack offence would be the amount of shots they put on the opposition goalie, they only average 30 shots per game which ranks them 22nd in the League. The power play is also very middling as it sits 17th in the league converting at 21.4 percent.

Defense
Winnipeg’s defense is the strong part of this Jets team, giving up the 3rd least amount of goals, only conceding 2.63 per game. They don’t give teams much to work with in the defensive zone, as they give up just under 31 shots per game, which is top 12 in the league. You could make the argument that the best apart of the Jets as a whole is their stifling penalty kill, killing off 83.5 percent of penalties. That 4th best penalty kills gets a workout some nights as the Jets are one of the most penalized teams in the NHL.
In this match up a definite advantage to the Jets penalty kill because the Islanders power play is one of the worst in the league only hitting at 17.4 percent.
Goaltending
All indications would point to the Jets going back to Hellebuyck in this match up, he is coming off of a monster effort vs the Rangers, and has been outstanding this season going 25-16-1. The Jets netminder also has 3 shutouts and a 2.42 Goals agianst average. He has been a big reason on why the Jets are battling for a Central divison title.
New York Islanders
New York will look to string two wins together for the forst time in 2 weeks. The Islanders needed a big 3rd period to pick the important two points vs the Penguins. New york was outplayed and outshot thru 40 mins getting out shot 37-24 over 40 mins. Bo horvat scored 8:34 into the 3rd to get it started, another goal by Anders Lee gave the isalnders the lead and Brock Nelson sealed with an empty netter with 25 seconds left.
Offense
Offensively, the Islanders struggle, bottom half of the league in most of the main categories including goals scored which is ranked 24th in the NHL only scoring 2.9 goals per game. A big part of that is because of their dreadful power play. The islanders only convert 17 percent on the power play.
Going up against a top notch goalie in Conner Hellebuyck they are going to need to muster up more than their usual average of 30 shots per game.
Defense
Defensively New York has been much better giving up only 2.78 goals per game and have the 5th ranked penalty kill. Recently over the last 3 games the Islanders have given up 12 goals. In a match up where the Jets have been scoring recently the Isalnders defence will need to be strong in this game.
Goaltending
At the time of writing this it looks like Ilya Sorokin will get the start for the Islanders, he’s had a pretty good year, his win loss record isnt impressive but that might not be all his fault. He supports a 2.44 goals against average and a great .924 save percentage. Sorokin will need to be at his best as he goes toe to toe with one the leagues best goalies at the other end.
