Does it ever feel great to say that NHL hockey is back again! The NHL paused the regular season way back on March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus.
There are in total 189 games that will not be completed.
What has the NHL done instead? They’ve put the 12 qualifying teams from the Eastern and Western conferences determined by points percentage as of that date into a “return to hockey playoff scenario”.
Seven teams did not qualify. The format was determined in meetings of the Return to Play Committee so don’t blame me.
The last time these two teams met was on October 26th, 2019 with Winnipeg winning 2-1 in the 2019 Tim Horton’s NHL Heritage Classic.
Bryan Little scored at 3:04 of overtime to give the Jets the win.
Winnipeg Jets
The Jets are 37-28-6, 4th Central, 6th West. The current Jets franchise has never played Calgary in the post-season before so this will look like an all-new playoff rivalry, and since they haven’t played much in recent memory it might almost feel like a Western conference team vs. an Eastern conference team.
The Jets do have a nice offense with multiple scoring threats in Mark Scheifele, Kyle Connor, Blake Wheeler, Patrik Laine and Nikolaj Ehlers.
In my opinion the remarkable play of Connor Hellebuyck is the only reason the Jets are in the playoffs. He comes into this series with a 2.64 Career GAA, and is 2.57 in 2019/20. His save % is .922 and he has 6 shutouts this season.
The Jets have the advantage in goal. The Jets are 16th overall with (213 GF) (average 3.00 GF).
Calgary Flames
The Flames are 36-27-7, 3rd Pacific, 7th West. On the Flames side of the ice the Jets will have to watch out for Matthew Tkachuk, as well as the top line which consists of Sean Monahan, Johnny Gaudreau and Elias Lindholm.
In net the Flames will go with David Rittich. He comes into this series with a 2.82 Career GAA, and is 2.97 in 2019/20. His save % is .907 and he has 2 shutouts this season.
The Flames are 20th overall with (204 GF) (average 2.91 GF).
NHL Betting Trends:
- Favorite is 10-4 in the last 14 meetings.
- Under is 18-6-2 in WIN last 26 vs. Pacific.
- Under is 5-2-2 in WIN last 9 games as an underdog.
- Under is 9-4-1 in WIN last 14 overall.
Free Winnipeg Jets vs. Calgary Flames NHL Prediction: UNDER 5.5
We can’t go off of history…Each team ended up nine games above .500 when the shutdown took place, so they’re pretty even in that regards.
It’s a best of five series, and anything can happen, but there will not be a home ice advantage on Saturday, and I don’t expect much offense in this one.
The defenses will be ahead of the offenses for a week or so here I’m guessing, this is after all preseason again basically.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Back Calgary in a low scoring game.
**NOTE** – The 2020 Stanley Cup Qualifiers will begin Saturday, Aug. 1 in Edmonton and Toronto. The top four teams in both conferences will play a 3-game round robin for seeding in the First Round. The 2020 Stanley Cup Qualifiers will be best-of-5 series with the losing teams being entered into Phase 2 of the NHL Draft Lottery.
