A pair of teams coming off of wild games will meet on Thursday night when the Capitals visit the Blues in St. Louis.
The Caps’ win streak was brought to a halt in a crazy 8-7 thriller against the Penguins, while the Blues were downed 6-4 by the Senators in their last outing.
Washington Capitals
Despite seeing their nine game winning streak come to an end in a crazy back and forth tilt with the Penguins, the Caps still have an active streak of not losing in regulation since December 27th when they were beaten 4-3 by the Islanders.
The Caps also haven’t lost a game by more than a single goal since a 3-0 loss back on December 1st to the very same Islanders.
This team is absolutely lighting up the scoreboard of late and during their nine-game win streak, piled up 40 goals….that’s 4.4 goals for per game.

The odd thing is, their biggest offensive output came in the game where their win streak was ended, when they found the back of the net seven times against the Penguins, only to lose 8-7 in OT.
Braden Holtby had been absolutely stellar in net for the Capitals leading up to rough night in Pittsburgh on Monday.
Good news for Caps fans is that the last time Holtby was yanked was on January 3rd against the Maple Leafs when he was tagged for three goals on just 8 shots in the first period.
How did Holtby respond? By allowing just three goals over his next five games while posting three shutouts.
Holtby should be back to his old self again on Thursday night.
St. Louis Blues
Speaking of goaltending, it has been the Achilles heel of the Blues for the most part this season, as both Jake Allen and Carter Hutton have struggled to find consistency.
Allen was miserable his last two starts, getting pulled against the Bruins after giving up three goals on 11 shots, only to get pulled yet again after allowing three goals on 15 shots against the Kings in his next start.
Hutton filled in admirably for the two games that followed, posting two wins including a shutout in back to back starts against the Sharks and Ducks, but his luck quickly ran out and he was lit up for five goals at the hands of the Senators.

It looks like the Blues will go back to Allen tonight as they seem to be of the mindset of “you win and you’re in” with their goalies for the time being.
Allen has a chance to prove that he can be the number one guy, and stopping a scoring a machine like the Capitals will go a long way to inspiring confidence in his coaches and teammates.

Free Washington Capitals vs. St. Louis NHL Hockey Prediction:
Two goalies looking for a bounce back has me leaning towards a low scoring game in this one. Holtby bounced back from getting pulled with back to back shutouts so at the very least I expect him to be good.
Allen is a question mark but I expect the Blues to be a lot more responsible defensively to help out their netminder.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Under 5.0 – +127
The under looks like an attractive pick in this one. Holtby should be solid and the Blues are going to be in a very ‘defence-first’ mode against the powerhouse offence of the Caps.
I think this one stays low-scoring and goes UNDER.
