The Pens took a commanding two-game lead on the road, earning the win in both of their matchups in the nation’s capital.
Now in a difficult 2-0 hole heading out on the road to Pittsburgh, the Caps will need their A-game to win the critical game 3, which will all but decide if they’re back in the series or virtually eliminated.
TJ Oshie has been Washington’s best player thus far through the first series and a half. Oshie owns the highest point total on the squad, with nine, and has averaged 21:19 time-on-ice thus far in the postseason.
Alex Ovechkin has four goals to lead his team in tallies, but will need a massive game in Pittsburgh as the Penguins have been dominating the score sheet. The Caps certainly have the team to close the series gap, but it starts with Ovie.
Braden Holtby, a Vezina candidate for his excellent regular season, has been in tough against the Penguins firepower. Holtby now owns a 2.62 GAA and a .911 SV% after a 6-2 loss in game 2.
The Penguins have been dominating the stats page, carrying on from a regular season where they led the league in goals with a 3.4 average.
It’s unsurprisingly the top trio who has provided the most offense for Pittsburgh.
Evgeni Malkin sits atop the NHL playoffs’ scoring with 13 points through six games played. He’s followed by his teammates Sidney Crosby and Phil Kessel, who each have 11, and Jake Guentzel, with 10.
Marc-Andre Fleury is loving life back in the starting role, after an injury to Matt Murray has allowed “Flower” to be the #1 since the start of the playoffs. Fleury has a .936 SV% and a 2.37 GAA.

Free Washington Capitals vs. Pittsburgh Penguins NHL Playoff Prediction:
After digging themselves a massive 2-0 hole, this is essentially a do-or-die situation for the Capitals in game 3. A loss would all but ensure they’re not winning the series, where a victory would pull them within one and still have a legitimate shot to win.
