The toss up -110 line for both teams sticks out for Tuesday night’s matchup between the Capitals and Rangers. Washington is the top team in the East and on a three game win streak. What gives with NYR?
Washington Capitals
Washington isn’t facing any major injury news ahead of Tuesday night’s rematch, so the fact they aren’t a -140 favorite or higher is very confusing. The Capitals were up 4-0 at one point in Sunday’s game.
The fact that Washington built the big lead is impressive, but having to hold on 5-4 also makes you a bit leery about this game. It was the third straight game going for 4+ goals for the Capitals – all wins.
Washington is also a pretty good team playing on the road, posting a 10-3-2 record away from Capital One Arena on the year. The Capitals are just 2-2 vs. New York the last four, and all four have been in Washington.
This will be the second visit to Madison Square Garden this season for Washington, losing 2-4 here back in February. That puts Washington’s record at 2-3 vs. the Rangers overall this season so maybe the -110 toss up is warranted.
New York Rangers
You have to give the Rangers credit, they fought back remarkably on the road on Sunday night. It would have been easy to call it a day down 4-0 with a little under 15 minutes to play, but NYR didn’t quit.
Colin Blackwell, Adam Fox, and Kevin Rooney all had multi-point games for the Rangers but they still suffered their second straight loss after three consecutive wins.
The big question for New York ahead of Tuesday night’s game is how do we get the scoring started a bit earlier and how do we stop Washington? One major change will be in net (likely).
3rd stringer Keith Kinkaid got the nod vs. Washington on Sunday, giving up 5 goals on just 22 SOG. That should put Igor Shesterkin back between the pipes with extra rest. Shesterkin has allowed 2 goals or less in 4 of his last 5 starts.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Capitals are 4-0 last 4 road games
- Capitals are 8-1 last 9 vs team with a losing record
- Capitals are 20-8 last 28 overall
- Rangers are 3-8 last 11 in the 3rd game of a 3-in-4 situation
- Over is 5-2 in Rangers last 7 home games
- Capitals are 2-5 last 7 meetings
- Home team is 6-2 last 8 meetings
Free Washington Capitals vs. New York Rangers NHL Prediction:
At first it seemed like this toss-up line was way off and that Washington would run away with things. The Rangers have kind of had the Caps’ number this year though, and that’s with 4 of 5 games being played at Capital One Arena.
New York had a back-tp-back on Saturday and Sunday though, Now they’re in the three games in four nights situation. Shesterkin should be rested, but the Capitals offense is also clicking.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Rangers -110
The public is going to be hammering Washington in an equal odds game between the 1st place and 6th place team in a division. If they really wanted you to take the Capitals, they would have made you pay more.
