Friday night’s clash at high elevation is the sterling example of ‘The Wolf on Top of the Mountain vs. The Wolf Climbing It Hungrily’.
The Caps may still be basking in their Stanley Cup victory – and it rather shows in their record – while the home team Avalanche are young, hungry, and prolific. It should be a dandy of a match-up in Denver on Friday night.
So far in their title-defending campaign, Washington has been, well, just OK. The Caps are in the middle of a log-jammed Metro division, and are just 4-6 in their past 10 games. Getting enforcer Tom Wilson back from suspension is nice, but DC was dealt another setback when starting goalie Braden Holtby got injured the other night.
The Caps of course still have the marquee talent – Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom and Evgeni Kuznetsov spring to mind – and a scorching power play (28.8% successful, good for 4th in the NHL), but they are leaking goals at an unsustainable pace too.
For the next little while, the Captials have a Herculean task required of their defencemen, until a premier starter like Holtby returns. They have to stem the tide of goals somehow.
With the absence of the opposition’s top goaltender, Colorado’s top line must be licking their chops. The Avs feature the most prolific top line in hockey even when starters are in the blue ice; Mikko Rantanen and Nathan MacKinnon are one-two in the league scoring race (29 points and 26 points, respectively) and Canadianized Swede Gabe Landeskog ain’t far behind (20 pts). They are on a torrid pace and even if it isn’t sustainable, those three are truly lethal on a nightly basis.
The Avs have other intriguing pieces, but head coach Jared Bednar’s team is definitely a top-heavy squad. Like Washington in the Eastern Conference, the Avs are smack-dab in the middle of the Central division, so the turbo-charged scoring doesn’t always translate to wins.
They’ve won their past two matches though, scoring 10 goals in the process. I’d be sweating if I were the visiting Capitals.

Free Washington Capitals vs. Colorado Avalanche NHL Prediction:
The reigning Stanley Cup champs are a deeper team than the home side on Friday night, but the offensive explosiveness of that Mac-Landy-Rants line is downright overwhelming, especially with backup Phoenix Copley in net (don’t know the name? Yeah, I didn’t either).
The 26-year old longtime AHL guy is from northern Alaska, which is pretty cool. Alaskan permafrost should melt from a sizzling Denver omelette of a top line on Friday night.
Expect Colorado to light the lamp more than once. More than twice. Several times in the Pepsi Center in front of the home fans.
