Wednesday night, the Stanley Cup Playoffs get underway as the Vegas Golden Knights travel to the SAP Center in San Jose to take on the Sharks in game one of round one. With odds evenly matched, this should be an exciting series for hockey fans and betting fans alike.
During the regular season, the Golden Knights and Sharks split the season series 2-2, with San Jose winning the final meeting at the end of March in overtime.
Vegas Golden Knights
Against San Jose this season, Vegas’ offense shined. In the team’s two wins over the Sharks, Vegas outscored them 13-3. Meanwhile, in the two losses, they were outscored just seven to five, losing one of those games in overtime.
The Golden Knights proved that, even with an offense that averages half a goal less than the Sharks, they can stick with this team and even blow them out if they keep the puck in the offensive zone.
Success for Vegas will have to come from good things happening on both ends of the ice. The Golden Knights were the 10th ranked defense this season, giving up 2.78 goals. The team was 13th in offense, averaging three goals per game.

Offensively, the team’s success starts with Jon Marchessault. He led the team in points with 59, tallying 25 goals and 34 assists in 82 games. He and William Karlsson (24 goals, 32 assists) were the offensive catalysts for this team, and they’ll need to find the back of the net multiple times if Vegas is going to win game one.
San Jose Sharks
Anytime a team is in the top five offensively, you have to like its chances in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Sharks are no exception. San Jose finished 2nd in offense this season, averaging 3.52 goals per game, and that gives the team an immediate advantage on its home ice for game one.
There’s no doubt that the Sharks are the better offensive team in this matchup, especially with Tomas Hertl and Joe Pavelski’s goal scoring ability. Hertl finished the regular season with 74 points, including 35 goals.
Pavelski continues to be an ageless wonder, and is having one of his best season’s. In 75 games, he tallied 38 goals (team leader) and 26 assists. The Captain continues to be a fantastic leader for this team and he’ll certainly bring experience and a high hockey IQ to this first round.

However, keep a close eye on the team defense in this first game. The Sharks weren’t exactly impressive in that regard this season, giving up 3.15 goals per game. That put the team 21st in the league, which isn’t exactly a stat you want to see for a potential Stanley Cup contender.
NHL Betting Trends:
- VEG are 1-7 in their last 8 overall
- VEG are 5-17 in their last 22 games as an underdog
- SJ are 3-9 in their last 12 overall
- Over is 6-2-1 in SJ last 9 vs. Western Conference
- Over is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings
Free Vegas Golden Knights vs. San Jose Sharks NHL Prediction:
Vegas comes in on a slump, winning just one of its last eight games, and that doesn’t bode well considering how tough San Jose can be at home. While this game stays close, I like the Sharks to get the win in game one.
4* Free NHL Playoff Betting Pick: OVER 6
It’s no secret that once the playoffs begin, defense hits a new level and there’s less scoring on average. That being said, this is a matchup between two good offensive teams that average at least three goals per game. I like the over in this one, especially if it stays at 6.
