Friday night will bring us game 3 of the conference final between the Vegas Golden Knights and the Montreal Canadiens. Both games have been fast paced and exciting, and we can expect more of the same for game 3.
Vegas Golden Knights
The story coming out of game 2 for Vegas is actually quite similar to their take away from game 1. They need to improve on the power play, and they need to get scoring from their stars up front. Alex Pietrangelo scored Vegas’ only two goals on Wednesday, which means that 5 of 6 goals Vegas has scored in this series have come from their blue line.
One goal in two games from your forwards is just not good enough. Especially when you have Mark Stone and Max Pacioretty on the roster. These two stars have been quiet throughout the play-offs and it has been masked by the second line picking up the slack. They were without their centreman in game 2, Chandler Stephenson, so they will have to overcome that difficulty as well.
Vegas also needs to come ready to play right from puck drop. Montreal was able to build an early lead while Vegas was chasing the game in the first period. Slow starts are starting to become a trend for this Golden Knights team, and it would serve them well to break that habit.
Despite the struggles the Vegas forwards are enduring, they are very capable of finding scoring all throughout their line up. I would expect William Karlsson, and Jonathan Marchessault to pick up their scoring pace throughout the rest of the series. If Vegas can continue to get contributions from their blue line, and add scoring from their forwards, it will greatly increase their chances of winning this series.
Montreal Canadiens
The Montreal Canadiens played game 2 exactly how they played against the Leafs and the Jets. They got out to an early lead, and they sat back and did their best to ensure Carey Price had the best opportunity to save every shot.
Montreal’s takeaways are also similar to those of game 1. They need to reduce the crowd in front of the net as much as possible to allow Price to track shots from the point, and they need to keep up their excellent penalty killing. The Habs have not allowed a power play goal against since the first round. It’s actually quite remarkable. Maybe the Habs should build a lead, then elect to only send out 4 players at a time.
Jokes aside, now is not the time to underestimate the Vegas Golden Knights. Fleury might be the second best goaltender in this series, but he’s still a future hall of famer who is perfectly capable of stealing a game. The Habs will need to continue their opportunistic scoring, and if possible, keep their foot on the gas for longer than the first two periods.

Montreal Played a great road game on Wednesday night, and to me, it seems the odd makers have somewhat overcorrected. Vegas is still the better team, and I think it’s a fairly good bet that they win game 3 by several goals, especially with the 70 point jump in the puck line odds compared to game 2.
