This should a very fun match up to watch. Both teams are off to the playoffs and both very skilled. Colorado will be putting their 5 game winning streak on the line in this one.
These two played each other on January 2nd and it was a tight game with Vegas grabbing the 2 points with a 3-2 win. I would expect this one to be very tight as well. Let’s take a deep dive into these two teams.
Vegas Golden Knights
Vegas comes into this game after losing 3-2 in a shootout on Saturday at home to Dallas. Now they will travel to Colorado and take on a very skilled Avalanche team who has won 5 straight. Vegas also has not faired well in Colorado losing the last 3 match ups at Bell arena. On a positive note for Vegas is they have the leagues best away record at 17-5-5.
Offense
The Golden Knights are kind of a team that doesn’t really do anything great but do everything good, they rank in the middle of of the pack for goals scored, middle of the league in power play percentage and in shots on target they rank 10th putting 33 shots on target per game. One thing Vegas does excel in is at the face off dot, they have the 7th best face off win percentage, when you win that many face offs you can maintain the puck and generate offence much quick and more effectively
Defense
The Golden Knights defence is some way is the same as the offence, nothing great but everything is solid. They don’t give up many goals, only allowing 2.76 goals per game, a big reason of why they don’t concede a-lot of goals is they prevent the other side from getting a lot of shots on target at only 30 per game. Vegas has a middle of the league power play at only 79.5 percent which only ranks them 16th. They are how ever the best disciplined team in the NHL averaging only 3 minor penalties per game.
Goaltending
Adin Hill is listed as the expected starter for the Golden Knights. Hill has been very good this season, going 14-5-1 with a superb 2.50 goals against average and a .908 save percentage. Hill has also won his last 4 starts.
Colorado Avalanche
Colorado will be coming into Monday looking to keep their win streak alive. They have won 6 of their the last 7 games with the only loss in that stretch coming in the shootout vs Tampa Bay. Colorado’s most recent win was a 4-1 win over the Calgary flames at home on Saturday. Even while being outshot the Avalanche seemed to be the better team throughout.
Avalanche come into this match up with a good home record of 15-9-4 which is middle of the pack, and a bit surprising for a team this good to struggle a little bit at home compared to other top teams.
Offense
Offensively the Avalanche struggle a little bit to score compared to other of the elite teams in the NHL only averaging 3.12 goals per game, but they are in the top half of the league in shots on goal, 33 per game which is 7th best, but as mentioned they struggle to score so it’s no surprise there 23rd in shooting percentage.
The power play is very good though ranking 9th in the NHL, which shouldn’t be a surprise as they have to so many elite goal scorers and playmakers. The man advantage might not get many opportunities as this Golden Knight’s team doesn’t take many penalties.
Defense
Defensively Colorado is very good in the goals conceded department, giving up only 2.7 goals per game which is 7th best in the NHL, which has a lot to do with the goaltending because this Avalanche team gives up a ton of shots, almost 34 per game which ranks them 24th. The penalty kill has also struggled this season only killing 77 percent of penalties which is a bit of a concern as they do take a lot of penalties
Goaltending
Alexandar Gorgiev is the listed expected starter for Monday night, he has a very good 25-12-4 record this season adding 2 shutouts on the season. Georgiev has won his last 4 starts and has only given up more than 3 goals once in his last 6 starts.
He has 2 starts this season against the Golden Knights and he has won 1 and lost 1.
