The Canucks and Flames faceoff on Opening Night as both teams get set for a rematch of their first round match up last season.
The Canucks will get a chance at a little bit of revenge as they were dropped by the Flames in 6 games.
The main reasoning for the Canucks series loss? Their road play inside the Saddledome.
The Canucks dropped all 3 contests on the road and pushed their record to 2-5 against the Flames on the road.
The Canucks did some reworking with their roster this past off season. They wanted to upgrade defensively, but also add a couple goal scoring threats to their team.
Their biggest departure came in defenseman Kevin Bieksa. The defenseman was traded to Anaheim for a 2nd round draft pick.
Offensively, the Canucks went out and made a big splash. They acquired Brandon Sutter from the Penguins in a trade that was centered around former Canucks player Nick Bonino.
Sutter offers a major goal scoring threat for Vancouver and will be placed in the line up with the Sedin twins. That first line will be a major threat, especially if Sutter can get in sync with the twins.
Sutter scored 21 goals for Pittsburgh last season. His biggest accomplishment came on the shorthanded side of things. Not only is Sutter a solid offensive threat, but he’s the top guy on penalty kill. Sutter finished with 4 short handed goals as well last year.
Vancouver split their head-to-head regular season series with Calgary last season.
The Flames used their youth and speed to become a legit contender in the National Hockey League. They showcased that with their opening round series win last year over Vancouver.
The Flames made their first playoff appearance since 2009, but were immediately bounced out of the playoffs after their win over Vancouver. Still, last season has a lot of highs for them to work off of and their young core is just getting better and better as the seasons go on.
F Sean Monahan will be in his 3rd season with Calgary as he tied for the team lead last year in goals with 31.
He’ll have some help as the Flames went out and acquired Dougie Hamilton in the off season from Boston. Hamilton had 10 goals and 32 assists last year and offers a solid compliment on the defensive side of things.
Expect G Karri Ramo to get the nod on Wednesday as Jiri Hudler continues to battle the flu.
