The Canucks just got done sending the #1 (regular season) team in the West, St. Louis, home after a 4-2 series win. Vancouver now sets their sites on Vegas, who many people think are going to represent the Conference in the Stanley Cup.
The Golden Knights haven’t been anointed just yet. They did look good in the first round beating Chicago 4-1, but this is a Canucks team that is on a nice run.
Vancouver Canucks
It’s not 100% known if Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington was out of it in the first round or if the Canucks offense made him look that bad. Binnington led St. Louis to the Cup last season but allowed 13 goals in three games vs. Vancouver last round.
The Canucks’ offense is nothing to shake a stick at – they did rank 8th during the regular season in goals scored. In 10 games this postseason, Vancouver has netted 4+ goals six times.
Jakob Markstrom wasn’t always great in goal in the first round allowing 3+ in 4 of the last 5 vs. St. Louis. He also faced at least 32 shots in every outing over that span including 49 in a game 3 loss. Vegas is the #1 team in SOG.
Vegas Golden Knights
The Golden Knights didn’t exert a whole lot of strain in getting rid of the Blackhawks 4-1 in the quarterfinals. Vegas was 3rd in the West with 86 points during the regular season while Vancouver would have been the 7 seed under normal circumstances.
The Golden Knights did win all three during the seeding round and are now 7-1 this postseason. This is going to be a tough team to wager against for the next 2-3 weeks.
Robin Lehner gives Vegas a championship edge in net. He came over from the Blackhawks prior to the trade deadline but did give up 3 goals in two of four vs. Chicago. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 26 of 27 shots in his one start in the quarterfinals.
