The St. Louis Blues have now tied the series 2-2 with the Vancouver Canucks in their Western Conference First Round.
This is the Canucks worst nightmare, and one they’ve lived before, coming out strong against a tough team, only to blow a two game lead.
If they’d managed to hang on for the win in overtime in Game 3 they might still have a chance, but as things stand now, it might end up being a 6 game series. So what has to change for the Canucks to avoid that outcome, and how can St. Louis continue their winning ways?
Vancouver Canucks
The Vancouver Canucks lost for the second consecutive time after following up Sunday’s 3-2 overtime defeat to the St. Louis Blues in Game 3 of their Western Conference First Round series with a 3-1 loss at Rogers Place in Edmonton the following evening.
The big story is Vancouver’s lack of offense, but it is also worth noting that five of St. Louis’s six even strength goals have been scored right in front of the net. The Canucks need to figure out a way to keep St. Louis to the outside in the defensive zone.
If their offensive chances are going to be limited, then they’ll need to find a way to do the same to the Blues, and that has not been the Canucks forte, they prefer to let Markstrom hold the fort and play a wide open offensive game with blue liners jumping up to assist.
Vancouver were outshot 37-23, went 3-for-5 on penalty kill and failed to convert on all of their seven power-play opportunities. If they can’t get their offense firing again, it does not bode well for the Canucks.
St. Louis Blues
The narrative will be that Jake Allen was the cure to what ailed the St. Louis Blues. Allen is 2-0 in the series against the Canucks and has stopped 61 of 64 shots. The real story though, is that the Blues opened it up offensively in Game 3 and then got the penalty kill working in Game 4.
In Game 4, the Blues scored two power play goals, including a 5-on-3 tally just before the penalty expired. Then the Blues shut it down in the third period.
Free Vancouver Canucks vs. St. Louis Blues NHL Prediction:
The Blues seem to have found their mojo again and the Canucks just don’t have the grit to dig down deep and find a way to win.
That’s been the knock on the Canucks for years and doesn’t seem to have changed, talented teams, but line-ups missing that X-factor that takes you to the Stanley Cup. As noted above, it’s looking like a six-game series.
