The Canucks are off to a better than average start to the 2019/20 campaign at 3-2. They have lost both their road games thus far though and hope to avoid a third straight away defeat Thursday at St. Louis.
Many would have forgiven St. Louis for stumbling out of the gate after last year’s Stanley Cup win. The Blues have picked up where they left off though, starting the year 3-1-2.
Vancouver Canucks
The Canucks started the year with back-to-back losses at at Edmonton and at Calgary. They scored just 2 goals total in those games and were just a +110 underdog in the season opening loss to the Oilers.
Since then though, Vancouver has gone on a roll. Yes, their three wins in a row have all come at home. Also yes, they’ve been favored in each of the wins over LA (-167), Philadelphia (-112) and Detroit (-147).
Are the Canucks easy to bet against on Thursday as they go on the road once again? St. Louis is a huge home favorite in this one at -181. The money has pushed that number up too after an opening line of STL -161.

The Canucks could be an upset win possibility at the Enterprise Center as their offense has come alive a bit recently. Vancouver netted 8 pucks in the win over LA and scored 5 most recently on Tuesday vs. Detroit.
The Vancouver defense has also looked improved this season. They gave up a respectable 3 goals in each of their two road losses to start the year but have buckled down to allow 5 total in the last 3 games.
Thatcher Demko is the probable starter vs. the Blues. He’ll be in net for Jacob Markstrom who is listed as Out-Personal. Demko went against Detroit on Tuesday for his first action of the year and stopped 26 of 27 shots.
St. Louis Blues
St. Louis seems to catch a break with Markstrom out as the regular Vancouver starter has allowed just 2 goals in each of his last three starts. The Blues need something to go their way after just finishing up a 2-2 road trip.
That .500 road swing includes two straight losses (@ Montreal, @ Islanders) even though St. Louis was favored in all four of the contests.
At least the Blues are back home on Thursday. It’s where they started the year with an OT loss to Washington as -162 favorites but then beat Dallas 3-2 with a line of STL -145.

The total for this matchup is just 5.5. At first glance this seems like an easy ‘over’ play. This is not only because Vancouver turns to a backup goaltender, but because the Blues have given up 13 goals total in the last 3 games.
Jordan Binnington has been in net for two straight losses, allowing 5 goals to Montreal and 3 to the Islanders. St. Louis is 22nd in the league in SOG against.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Canucks are 22-51 last 73 road games
- Canucks are 10-26 last 36 games as an underdog
- Blues are 6-0 last 6 Thursday games
- Blues are 21-10 last 31 home games
Free St. Louis Blues vs. Vancouver Canucks NHL Prediction:
The line has climbed towards St. Louis’ side on the news that Vancouver will start their 2nd string goaltender. Demko played solid in his season debut Tuesday however. The Blues should still be able to score, but so will Vancouver.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Over 5.5
Binnington doesn’t look like the Stanley Cup winning goaltender over his last couple starts.
