The Sharks are in the league’s aristocracy right now, while the visiting Vancouver Canucks aspire to get there. The ‘Nucks aren’t by any means a finished product, but they seem well on their way to building a great young term. San Jose should be on notice at home in the notoriously raucous Shark Tank in Silicon Valley.
Van City has been doing great considering of of its best players, scorer Brock Boeser, has been out for virtually the entire season. In steps Elias Pettersson, a young phenom who some have hyperbolised is like a young Wayne Gretzky. At the very least, the baby-faced Swede is a sick hockey player. Youngish coach Travis Green seems to be pushing the right buttons with this group, and though their season hasn’t been without pockmarks – like right now, as Vancouver has been losers of seven straight – the future looks bright with Pettersson, Boeser, Nikolay Goldobin, Jake Virtanen and Bo Horvat.
One thing that has been scuppering the Canucks on this losing streak is the goaltending. Vancouver must get better performance in the blue ice, Anders Nilsson and, especially, starter Jacob Markstrom, have not been cutting the mustard on the Left Coast of Canada.
San Jose Sharks
The Sharks have a very talented outfit. That said, they are playing fine, but they can definitely reach a next level. Free agent whale Erik Karlsson just scored his first goal for the club, even from the back end, that first marker took a while. There’s definitely good news to reference – young forward Timo Meier has really broken out, and Joe Pavelski is having his usual strong campaign – but this collection of good hockey players can improve collectively. There’s no question about that.
Probably the best news to take away from that forecast is that the Sharks sit second in the Pacific division, even though they aren’t playing their premium game. San Jose is coming off a loss to Edmonton, though one might expect the Oil to have some jump after the recent coaching change of Ken Hitchcock coming into the fold. The teal and black should be able to pot some goals against the visitor’s lacklustre goaltending, though.

Free Vancouver Canucks vs. San Jose Sharks NHL Prediction:
The SAP Center is a testy place to play, and all things being equal, I like the Sharks’ chances of scoring multiple goals against either Markstrom or Nilsson. Yet, Vancouver must be growing frantic with the extended losing slump. The team’s top guns will be firing at will to put something past Sharks goalie Martin Jones.
Very tough to call, because San Jose is still clearly the superior team. I think I’ll err on the side of Vancouver, despite its best efforts, making it eight consecutive losses.
