The Philadelphia Flyers are playing their first game in their home opener with high expectations. The chatter is that this team has finally solidified it’s defense after years of being offensively oriented and weak on the back end.
Vancouver played their last game against the Edmonton Oilers a couple days ago and lost in a shootout. They tied it up late after getting outplayed most of the game, so that was a bittersweet win for them to get a point.
The Canucks had to go up against McDavid and Draisaitl but held their own defensively. They were outshot and outchanced, but didn’t let up as many high danger scoring chances as would be expected playing against those two stars.
Vancouver Canucks
There was certainly room for improvement last game even though the game went to OT, where they eventually lost. They only let up one even strength goal, which is something to be happy with.
However, they only generated 39% of the 5 on 5 expected goals, and 8 high danger scoring chance versus 12 for the Oilers. Teams can be expected to score about one even strength goal for every 7 high danger scoring chance, which checks out here.
A lot of big names for the Canucks didn’t have a great game, leading me to believe they were given the task of just shutting down the top lines of the Oilers and not generating much offensively. The Flyers don’t have forwards that are as dangerous, so I expect a better game out of these players.
Teams that are playing in their second game against a team playing their first game win about 60% of the time since 2006, as long as they have rest in between. We saw a bunch of teams lose on the second game but on a back-to-back, so it seems rest and a “warm-up game” is the recipe for success.
Philadelphia Flyers
Philadelphia has high expectations for themselves this year. Last year they were at the top of the division almost halfway through the season before falling off a cliff and not really coming close to making the playoffs.
The main issue was that they had an offense, no defense, and their goaltending was the worst duo in the league. Carter Hart is better than he showed us last season, so I don’t expect that to continue, but I’m a little more subdued in their outlook for this year.
Their big pickup was defender Ristolainen from the Sabres. He’s more of an offensive-defenseman, but that’s not the issue. The issue is that he’s overvalued and not a very good defender.
The Flyers injury list is pretty long, and I don’t know if we’ll see anything close to the team we’ll be seeing in a month or so.
NHL Betting Trends:

- The Under is 5-1 in the last 6 PHI games with 3+ days off.
4* Free NHL Betting Prediction: Vancouver Canucks +130
The Canucks are in a good spot playing their second game, while the Flyers are banged up. Demko in net for the Canucks should be the best goalie on the ice unless Hart can bring back his level from two years ago.
It’s definitely worth a shot taking the Canucks at this price.
