The Canucks have managed to come from a 3-1 deficit to tying the series and forcing a Game 7, which is an almost impossible feat in the NHL playoffs.
Add that it’s against a team that is one of the favorites to compete for the Stanley Cup and you have the makings of a miracle. Alas, one cannot bet on miracles ( at least you shouldn’t).
What are the real prospects of a Vancouver upset victory over Vegas? Let’s take a look.
Vancouver Canucks
Back-up goalie Thatcher Demko is still in goal for the injured Jacob Markstrom. Many thought that was the end of the Canucks playoff run, as Markstrom had been (mostly) stellar in goal.
Instead of disaster Demko seems to have inspired the team, and while the Canuck’s defence still looks weak, they’re getting more support from the third line, giving the the Pettersson and Horvat lines a breather.
Still, the offensive output, was not what it should be. Vegas put almost twice the number of shots on goal as Vancouver. If Vancouver wants to pull off the miracle of a Game 7 win they need way more offensive firepower on net.
Las Vegas Golden Knights
Goalie Rob Lehner seems to have been solidified his replacement of former franchise player Marc-Andre Fleury, but Vegas may rethink that move for Game 7, as Lehner gave up five goals on 24 shots in Game 6.
On the power play they went 0-7 and it probably shows that critical weakness in the Knights – their defence, while solid, doesn’t step up into the play.
On the plus side, the Knights were able to get 42 shots on goal against the anemic Vancouver defence, but the aforementioned Demko stopped them all. But its shows, Vegas has the skaters to get goals on net, eventually some will go in.
