Don’t go gently into that goodnight, that Dylan Thomas quote usually gets used at least once in a professional sports playoff series, but the Canucks seem to have taken that sentiment to heart.
Although they were heavily outplayed in Game 5, getting outshot 43-17 by Vegas, they still managed to stay alive thanks to rookie Goalie Thatcher Demko’s incredible performance.
But Vegas is still a powerhouse team at forward and have four lines that can score, surely they won’t be denied victory and a chance to close out the series in Game 6? Well, let’s consider…
Vancouver Canucks
The big question is, can the Canucks rely on goaltending to steal another victory and force a Game 7?
As noted above, rookie and backup goalie Thatcher Demko took over for the injured Markstrom, and made a surprising start, basically stealing the Game 5 win.
Jacob Markstrom who had been solid in the net for the Canucks, had started every single game this postseason, but he was deemed unfit to play prior to puck drop. In steps Demko to make an incredible 42 saves in his first NHL career playoff start.
But that performance belies Vancouver’s weakness on defense. Just as with Markstrom they continue to play a wide open game, and hope their goalie keeps them in it.
It’s risky, but seems to be the only way this young team know how to play, and with their weak defense they don’t really have another option.
Las Vegas Golden Knights
Goalie wise, it’s also a mystery which back-stopper will be getting the call for Vegas. Neither Lehner or former franchise player Marc-Andre Fleury have been anywhere near exceptional this postseason.
Yes Lehner has two shutouts against the Canucks, but against an anemic offense that couldn’t get anything started.
Vegas will likely go back to the Fleury for Game 6 and save Lehner for a possible Game 7, which will be played back to back.
Definitely the Golden Knights are going to be a frustrated team heading into Game 6 after scoring just one goal on 40-plus shots in Game 5. Does it mean they’ll make stupid mistakes help them focus on closing out the series?
Free Vancouver Canucks vs. Las Vegas Golden Knights NHL Prediction:
There’s something about Vancouver’s two victories in this series that don’t exactly instill much confidence for prospective bettors. In both victories, the Canucks were heavily outshot and required tremendous goaltending performances to win.
So how far will this Cinderella story go? According to the odds it should all come to a crashing halt in Game 6. But with the price on the Canucks, I’d say it’s worth betting this story has one more chapter left to play.
