Since the Las Vegas Golden Knights broke onto the scene as the NHL’s newest expansion team they have been one of the most exciting teams to watch, and their latest playoff run has been no exception, that is until Game 2 against the Vancouver Canucks.
Does this mean the Canucks might actually continue their playoff run after unseating the Stanley Cup Champions, St. Louis Blues in the first round? I guess anything’s possible.
Vancouver Canucks
Vancouver showed, with their a 5-2 win on Tuesday, that their defeat of the Blues was more than just good luck. They certainly stepped it up and played much better than in Game 1.
Offensively Bo Horvat led the way, scoring a pair of goals. His first came in the opening period, where his snap shot on a powerplay gave the Canucks a 2-0 lead.
Vancouver’s offense also got a boost with the return of winger Tyler Toffoli. Toffoli had been out since the opening game of the NHL restart, but stepped onto the top line with Elias Pettersson and Tanner Pearson.
Elias Pettersson for his part remains a reliable goal scorer and playmaker for the Canucks. More importantly goalie Jacob Markstrom was back to solid form after his meltdown in Game 1, which saw him pulled in the third period after allowing five goals on 34 shots in the 5-0 loss.
Las Vegas Golden Knights
Game 2 was certainly a disappointing defeat for the Knights, a two game lead in a series, almost guarantees a win, but now they are tied in the series at one win apiece. It’s clear that Vegas’ weak link at the moment lies in the goaltending position.
Robin Lehner allowed five goals and made 22 saves Tuesday night, good for an .846 save percentage. That figure shouldn’t be classified as good by any means, especially when we consider the Golden Knights outshot the Canucks 40-27 in the loss.
Fortunately for them, they have their former star goaltender, Marc-Andre Fleury, waiting in the wings. Fleury only has an .886 save percentage over two games during the current playoff run, but if he can find a way back to his old level of play the Knights will be formidable indeed.
Free Vancouver Canucks vs. Las Vegas Golden Knights NHL Prediction:
There’s no doubt about it, the Canucks are looking good and Vegas may be over valued. Both teams play a wide open style of offense, but without reliable goaltending that can leave you wide open.
