The Maple Leafs have been a nice story this year after finishing near the bottom last season and winning the draft lottery for the first overall selection.
Auston Matthews was their pick, and he’s proving that a rebuilding team who gets the #1 pick in the right year can fast forward their rebuild.
On the other side of the dot is the New York Rangers team that seems to be perpetually strong year in and year out.
The Rangers have the ability to sign and retain good veteran players considering the town is a desired destination for most and the franchise is a storied one.
Toronto Maple Leafs
Auston Matthews has done everything that the Leafs could have hoped for in this rookie season, and probably more.
At the midway point of the season, Matthews has netted 21 goals which places him in a tie for 3rd overall in the NHL and in a tie with fellow rookie sensation, Patrik Laine.
Matthews is a franchise changing talent that the Maple Leafs have been craving for decades. He’s also poised off the ice and is able to handle the media and the scrutiny that comes along with the Toronto spotlight, so he appears to be a perfect fit for the franchise.

Fellow rookie talents, William Nylander and Mitch Marner, could have easily taken Matthews spot in the upcoming All-star game, as each are having tremendous seasons. Marner had 32 points in 39 games played and Nylander has 26 in 38, respectively.
Morgan Reilly is the centrepiece on the backend for the Buds, playing the most minutes for the team at 22:43 on average and collecting 17 points along the way.
Jake Gardiner has had a great season under new head coach, Mike Babcock, with 21 points of his own. The two, along with rookie Nikita Zaitsev, could form the core of a building top-four.
Frederik Andersen has turned it on after a slow start to the year, and the Leafs’ new netminder now owns a 17-9-7 record to go along with a 2.69 GAA and a .918 SV%.
New York Rangers
The Rangers have slipped slightly from their earlier standing in the season when they sat 1st overall in the Metro Division, but now are in 4th overall in the Division.
The Blueshirts still rank 2nd overall in goals per game amongst the 30 NHL teams, with a mark of 3.4 on average. They also sit 9th overall in the league at 2.5, 4th in powerplay percentage at 23.2% and 9th in penalty kill at 83.1%.
Leading the charge on offense in New York are Derek Stepan and Kevin Hayes, who each have 31 points on the season as part of a balanced Rangers’ attack. Michael Grabner has been a nice get for NY, as he leads the team in goals with 19 on the season through 42 games.

The backend is led by captain, Ryan McDonagh, who is registering 24:12 ATOI for the most amongst any Ranger, and has chipped in 25 points in 41 games. Nick Holden and Brady Skjei have been a nice pairing and sit at 22 and 17 points, respectively.
In net, the changing of the guard may be underway, with Antti Raanta holding a 2.28 GAA and a .921 SV% on the year.
While he’s produced better numbers than the incumbent Henrik Lundqvist, it doesn’t appear like King Henrik is going anywhere any time soon, as he’s played better of late and increased his stats to a 2.55 and .912, respectively.
NHL Betting Trends:

- Toronto is 8-6-6 on the road this year
- Auston Matthews 35 points trails just Patrik Laine’s 37 for the rookie lead
- New York is 13-7-1 at home
- New York has a goal differential of +39 on the year
Free Toronto Maple Leafs vs. New York Rangers NHL Hockey Prediction:
While the defensive units have performed better this year than last, there have been five or more goals in each of Toronto’s last nine games.
I like both of the goalies in this game, but feel that the offense might trump (pun intended) the defense in this game.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Over 5.5
Look for the offensive young stars to shine in this game, which should be a fun showdown to watch at MSG.
