This original six match up will kick off the season for both the Leafs and the Habs. Last season, Montreal took the play-off series between these two in seven games. No doubt the Leafs will be looking to make a statement to open the season.
Toronto Maple Leafs
The Leafs have had a fair amount of turnover this offseason, but the core remains the same. In net, Freddy Anderson is out, and Petr Mrazek is in. The biggest loss for the leafs this off season, was winger Zach Hyman who will be dearly missed on the left wing.
The Leafs will also be missing Auston Matthews, as well as Ilya Mikheyev for at least the first game. Mikheyev is expected to be out several weeks, while Matthews could be in the line up soon, but not in the season opener against Montreal.

With number 34 out of the action, the Leafs will be looking to make adjustments to their powerplay, which could actually help the team. The tail end of last season saw the Leafs put up a dreadful powerplay percentage, In one particular stretch the team went 2 for 46.
That man advantage stat is laughable, and the Leafs will need to improve on that, not only in this game, but in this season as a whole.
Montreal Canadiens
It’s pretty rare for a team to make it all the way to the Stanley Cup Final, only to be written off as a fluke, but that’s more or less what has happened to Montreal.
This is partially due to departures from big names such as, Phillip Danault and Jesperi Kotkaniemi, but it is also due to players under contract who will not be playing, at least to start the season. Carey Price, the Habs superstar goaltender is out for an indefinite amount of time, and so is their captain, Shea Weber.
That’s a lot of star power to lose, but the Habs still boast a strong roster. Jake Allen was extended last year, in a move that raised eyebrows around the league, but Allen steadies the Habs in net.
Montreal will also be putting their faith in their young players such as Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield, who will both start the season on the Habs’ top line.
The Habs were never an easy team to play against last year, and while most people expect them to take a step back, they will continue to make life hard for opposing teams. They’re also very young, skilled, and should be a lot of fun to watch.

Free Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Montreal Canadiens NHL Prediction
On paper, Toronto has a much better team than Montreal. However, there’s just something about Leafs home openers that fills me with confidence for the opposing team.
Hockey is often a mental game, and I don’t think the Leafs are mentally prepared to rematch the team that was their downfall last season.
