With wins in the last three games, the Toronto Maple Leafs are still in the Wild Card hunt for the Eastern Conference Playoffs. The team will look to continue its recent run of solid play against a struggling Florida Panthers team.
The Panthers, with losses in five straight and eight out of the last nine, are all but out of the playoff picture unless the team wins nearly every game at this point.
Florida will look for a win against fellow Atlantic Division Toronto.
Toronto Maple Leafs
It’s been a season of ups and downs for the Toronto Maple Leafs but the future is certainly bright for one of the younger teams in the NHL. The Leafs suit up a bunch of rookies that can really play, including the 2016 #1 overall draft pick Auston Matthews.
Matthews is having a brilliant rookie campaign, posting 31 goals and 24 assists on the season. In his last five games, he’s been in a bit of a slump.
He doesn’t have a single point over that time, his longest point drought since the end of October, his first month in the league.
Despite his slump, the Leafs have played well recently. Veteran Nazem Kadri has been great for this team. He has 28 points and 22 assists on the season, including three goals in his last five games.
He is one of the older forwards – at age 26 – and has provided some leadership for these younger players.
The Toronto offense has been great thanks to a lot of good play from the forwards, ranking 6th in the league in goals scored (204). However, the defense leaves a lot to be desired, ranking 22nd in the league in goals against (199).
With losses in eight of the last nine games, Florida’s playoff hopes are all but over at this point. Other Eastern Conference teams like Toronto and New York Islanders are playing well and fighting for the 2nd Wild Card spot.
Frankly, the Panthers haven’t looked good on either side of the ice, giving up 19 goals in the last five games while only scoring 10.
Vincent Trocheck has been Florida’s most consistent offensive weapon, scoring 22 goals and 25 assists on the year. In his last five games, he has four assists. Trocheck has been a great skater for the Panthers but he hasn’t been able to get things done alone.
The defense and goaltending have been extremely poor recently. On the year, the Panthers give up 2.88 goals per game but have given up 3.8 goals per game over the last five.
On the other side of the ice, Florida has only averaged 2.0 goals per game during that stretch.
NHL Betting Trends:
- The Total has gone UNDER in six of Toronto’s last eight games
- Florida is 1-8 SU in the last nine games
Free Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Florida Panthers NHL Hockey Prediction:
Florida can’t seem to figure things out over the past 10 games. It’s not looking like it’s going to get fixed any time soon. With Toronto’s potent offense, I like the Leafs to get the W in this one.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Toronto ML
Toronto is actually the underdog in this one, despite winning three straight and Florida losing five straight. I think the Toronto money line is a good bet here.
