The Atlantic Division Maple Leafs head on the road to Florida to take on the fellow Atlantic Division Florida Panthers in what will be each team’s first game back from the holiday break.
Toronto went into the break in solid fashion, scoring 10 goals in its last two games, winning both. Meanwhile, the Panthers lost their last two, including a heartbreaking shootout loss to Detroit.
Toronto Maple Leafs
If Toronto can continue to play the way it played in the last two games, there is still a good shot that the team can find its way into the playoffs this year. The Maple Leafs aren’t a bad team by any means and are looking like they’re a year away from being great. With a nucleus of young, quick, offensive-minded talent, the Leafs have a lot of potential.

Toronto has looked much better on both sides of the ice in the last five games. At 3-1-1, Toronto has rediscovered the offense that made the team so fun to watch early on in the season.
Rookie Auston Matthews continues his great season. He has 16 goals and 10 assists on the year, including three and one in his last five games.
The Leafs are a really fun offensive team and they can blow by opponents if that offense is firing on all cylinders. Florida has struggled to find any consistency this year and I think the Leafs can take advantage of the Panthers’ shortcomings and get a needed division win.
Florida Panthers
24th in goals for, 16th in goals against, a minus-12 goal differential. Because of injuries and roster and front office shake-ups, Florida is really having a hard time this year and it doesn’t look like things are going to get any easier in the near future.
The Panthers are still at least six weeks away from the return of Jonathan Huberdeau and will be trying anything and everything to stay in the playoff hunt for when he gets back to full strength.
The last five games have been tough for even the top players on the Panthers. Jon Marchessault has zero goals in the last five and Vincent Trocheck has one goal.
The brightspot for the Panthers has been center Aleksander Barkov. He has three goals and four assists in his last five games, giving him nine and 18 on the year.

To beat Toronto, Florida will have to take away Toronto’s fast-paced forecheck and limit the chances on goal. If they start losing pucks in the defensive zone, Toronto will put the puck in the net.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Toronto is 4-2 ATS in its last six games
- The OVER is 3-2 in Florida’s last five games
Free Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Florida Panthers NHL Hockey Prediction:
Toronto is trending upward, while Florida continues to look shaky and the front office continues to make questionable changes. It’s hard to bet on the Panthers in their current state, and I like Toronto’s offense.
