Coming off a 4-0 shutout win over Calgary, the Toronto Maple Leafs are heading to Detroit to take on the Red Wings on Wednesday night.
Detroit, on the second night of a back-to-back after a game against Boston, will look to get a win against an increasingly tough Toronto team.
Toronto Maple Leafs
Toronto has started 2017 off with a record of 6-2-2 and the Leafs are starting to look like a scary team. The team has improved on both sides of the ice and its young nucleus has figured out how to play together and play well.
Toronto suits up six rookies, all of whom rank in the top 20 in rookie points in the NHL. Mitch Marner leads the way with 39 points, including 11 goals and 28 assists. Marner has been wonderful, but slightly overshadowed by #1 draft pick Auston Matthews.

Matthews has been a goal-scoring force, to no one’s surprise. He has 22 goals this season, along with 16 assists. Over his last five games, he has cooled off slightly, but still has contributed a goal and an assist.
William Nylander has been an important young forward, as well. His puck control and passing have made him a force in the offensive zone.
He has nine goals and 21 assists on the year, including three assists over his last five games.
Detroit Red Wings
As a hockey fan, you keep hoping that things will turn around for the Red Wings in their last season at The Joe. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like that’ll happen and the injuries are a big reason why.
The injuries continue to be a big problem for Detroit. Jimmy Howard, Niklas Kronwall, and Brendan Smith have been out for quite some time and continue to be on the injured reserve.
Detroit’s top two weapons are now on the injured list as well. Dylan Larkin has an upper-body injury and there is no definitive timetable for his return.
He has 12 goals and six assists on the year and was playing some solid hockey.
Thomas Vanek has a lower body injury and won’t suit up on Tuesday night against Boston.
[dfads params=’groups=234&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
There is no telling if he’ll suit up Wednesday against Toronto. Vanek was playing some solid hockey, leading the team with 12 goals and 19 assists.
Detroit ranks 23rd in the NHL in goals scored (120) and these injuries to key players like Vanek and Larkin won’t help an already struggling offense.
NHL Betting Trends:
- The Total has gone OVER in seven of Toronto’s last 10 games
- Detroit is 4-1 ATS in the last five games
Free Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Detroit Red Wings NHL Hockey Prediction:
Toronto should be able to get a win in the Joe on Wednesday. The Red Wings are even more plagued with injury than usual. Toronto gets the W on the road.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Toronto ML
You can’t bet on a Detroit team with all of these injuries, especially when Toronto is playing so well lately. I like the Toronto money line in this one.
