The Leafs rinsed the Penguins 4-1 who I had on the moneyline and I do apologize for leaning that way. The Penguins allowed a breakaway goal to Matthews twenty seconds in and never picked up any momentum.
My philosophy with the Leafs will never change and perhaps it is not a smart way to bet admittedly, but if I see that they are favored against teams like the Penguins I will almost always fade them.
In this one, another team that I think is better (and tougher) than them comes to town as underdogs, the St. Louis Blues. The Blues as I said in my Kraken/Flames post are a true top dog in the west.
They play a hard nosed style and are very capable of trading offence with even the most potent attacks in the league.
So let’s take a closer look into this one and see which side needs it.
St. Louis Blues
The Blues are one of a handful of teams that don’t have a ton of cracks in their game. This team I like especially because they can get things done a number of ways.
Their identity isn’t to dictate terms with their speed and skill. They dictate the game by being shapeshifters.

If you want to play soft, they come at you with toughness and the cycle game. If you want to take risks, they will turn it over and bury you off the rush.
This team as I have said before looks much like they did when they won the cup. They play a really sound and balanced style of play with great goaltending to boot.
Toronto Maple Leafs
The Leafs really grind my gears both as a bettor and as a fan of hockey. But, as we have seen this really is the best we have seen them play with this current core of players.
They have the games #1 power play and they are truly a treat to watch snap the puck around with the man advantage. If you caught any of the game against Pittsburgh you saw this on full display.
They also are getting really great play from their big boys on the blue line, Morgan Reilly and Jake Muzzin. Muzzin does not get the love his teammate does but he really has been such a good addition since coming over from LA and is a quiet leader for this squad.

You can fade me on this one if you would like and I will understand why if you do. The Leafs at home this year have been stellar and are more than capable of winning this game (obviously).
However, given how long it’s taken me to reconcile my nature I can’t figure I’d forgo it on their account now. Hopefully that reference will land with any of you who are True Detective fans out there.
Anytime I see a team like the Blues getting this line against a team that they can no doubt beat I just have to go with the value. Lay a half unit if you feel more comfortable but lay the Blues side here. Happy hockey!
