Two teams with high hopes for the shortened 2021 campaign kick off their seasons on Wednesday in Denver. The Colorado Avalanche try to rebound after a 7-game loss to the Stars in the 2nd round of last year’s playoffs.
St. Louis has made some changes after they fell short in defending their Stanley Cup win from two years ago. The Blues are looking for a restart after going winless in the seeding round and falling in six games to Vancouver last year.
St. Louis Blues
St. Louis has a tough defensive test against one of the best offenses in the West. That challenge gets even bigger as the team must adjust to the loss of team captain Alex Pietrangelo, who is off to the Golden Knights.
The Blues are also putting the goaltending duties solely in Jordan Binnington’s hands, after Jake Allen went to the Canadiens. Allen was a very solid 12-6 with a 2.15 GAA last season.
Binnington is of course solid too though, posting a 30-13-7 record with a 2.56 GAA. This one might turn into a high scoring affair though, and the 5.5 total seems very low.
Colorado Avalanche
Colorado can contend this year if they stay healthy. Nathan Mackinnon is one of the top scorers in the league, and he carried the team at times last year with line mates Gabriel Landeskog and Mikko Rantanen both missing time.
The Avs can also score from the blue line, as Cale Makar (50 points) is one of the bright young defenseman in the league. Colorado was 4th in scoring last season despite being less than full strength for long stretches.
What really doomed Colorado in last season was the health of their goaltenders. The Avs were down to 3rd and 4th stringers in the playoffs, but Philipp Grubauer and Pavel Francouz should be healthy for the start of the season.

Colorado can score, but Avalanche goaltenders might understandably be a bit rusty in their own rights.
