There’s two schools of though when it comes to playing in a back-to-back this soon after the all-star break. 1) does the team having the extra day off have an advantage for rest or b) is it better to have a game under your belt?
That’s the scenario we see when St. Louis visits Calgary on Tuesday. The Blues are playing in Vancouver on Monday, shaking off the rust of an 8-day layoff. It’s Calgary’s first game back from vacation however.

Both teams won 4 of 6 prior to the layoff. The odds were a bit late coming out as of publishing time but one would have to think oddsmakers give Calgary the edge – at home and with the Blues on 0 days rest.
St. Louis Blues
St. Louis decided to go with Jake Allen in net the 1st game back from the break against the Canucks. They do have two quality goaltenders, and Allen has a 4-2-1 record his last 7 decisions.
By going with Allen when St. Louis was a -128 favorite in Vancouver, it saves Jordan Binnington to face the Flames. Binnington was on a roll with wins in 7 of 8, but dropped his last two before the break while allowing 8 goals total.
St. Louis still has a comfortable 6 point lead over Colorado in the Central, and that’s with a slow start for the defending Stanley Cup Champions.
The Blues have won mostly with their top 7 defense, even though 4 of their last 5 games have gone ‘over’ the total. The St. Louis offense also had 4+ goals in 3 of 5 before returning to face Vancouver on Monday.
Calgary Flames
As stated, Calgary will have the benefit of being at home and being at full energy compared to St. Louis returning with a back-to-back right off the bat.
Home ice has been decent for the Flames who are 13-7-3 at Scotiabank Saddledome this season. Calgary is right in the thick of things in the Pacific, just a point back from the Canucks depending on how Vancouver did Monday.
The Flames don’t score a ton, their 2.6 goals per game is way down there at 26th in the league. Calgary was held to 2 goals or less in 5 of 6 before the all-star break.
With not a whole lot of scoring expected from Calgary, the pressure falls on Flames goaltender David Rittich. He has allowed 4 goals in 3 of his last 5 however.
