Oddsmakers aren’t expecting much of a fight from San Jose on Wednesday night, making the Golden Knights huge favorites at home. It makes sense, the Sharks are the 2nd worst team in the West.
San Jose Sharks
There are some signs that San Jose is playing a bit better as of late. They swept Anaheim on the road in a two game series, 6-0 and 3-1 and hung tough in Monday’s 2-1 loss to the Golden Knights.
Was Monday’s game that close though? Vegas held a 1-0 lead for most of the game, added an insurance score in the 3rd, and things only got tight after a Sharks score at 14:29.
The loss to Vegas broke a 3-game win streak for the Sharks, but it was also their fourth loss in as many games to Vegas this season. San Jose has been decent on offense this year, and their defense is showing signs of improving as well.
The Sharks rank dead last in the NHL in allowing 3.5 goals/game, mostly due from giving up so many SOG (32.0, 30th in the league). San Jose has only allowed 5 goals total in the last 4 games though.
Vegas Golden Knights
Vegas had a nice outing with a 2-1 win over San Jose on Monday. A trip up in that contest could have been expected as the Golden Knights were returning home after a 4-2 road trip.
That away stretch included two wins in the Shark Tank with Vegas scoring 9 goals total in the two contests. San Jose’s defense has played better lately, but this test will see if that’s for real.
What’s unfortunate for the Sharks is that playing solid on defense isn’t enough against Vegas, you somehow have to score vs. the Golden Knights defense as well.
The Golden Knights rank 3rd in the league giving up just 2.2 goals/game. Robin Lehner is still out with an upper body injury, but Marc-Andre Fleury is on a roll with 1 goal or less allowed in 5 of the last 7.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Sharks are 1-4 last 5 vs. team with a winning record
- Sharks are 5-12 last 17 as a road underdog
- Under is 4-0-1 in Sharks last 5 overall
- Golden Knights are 19-7 last 26
- Golden Knights are 36-16 last 52 home games
- Over is 5-2-1 in Golden Knights last 8 as a favorite
- Sharks are 0-5 last 5 head to head meetings
Free San Jose Sharks vs. Vegas Golden Knights NHL Prediction:
It’s hard not to like the Golden Knights in this one riding a 5-game win streak over the Sharks, but San Jose has played better lately. There’s also not a whole lot of value in Vegas at the -230 price.
The odds are better that Vegas wins this one by two scores or more than they are San Jose getting to Fleury. The Golden Knights goaltender is on a roll, and actually has more rhythm without Lehner stealing starts.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Vegas -1.5 (EVEN)
The Sharks looking better on defense can only be trusted so much.
