The fanfare and bravado should be high in the Canadian Tire Centre for a change, as prodigal son Erik Karlsson returns for his first game back in Ottawa. He should get a very warm reception. The home team’s reception against the talented Sharks, however, could be another matter entirely.
San Jose Sharks
The Sharks are a really good team, but they surely must have another gear they have yet to find. Shiny new toy blueliner Erik Karlsson (a former Senator, no less) has been good, but not spectacular like he is supposed to be. An elevation in his play would likely be a rising tide that lifts all boats for those ocean-dwelling Sharks. Sorry about the extended metaphor.
San Jose has enjoyed characteristic good years from Joe Pavelski and Logan Couture, and a breakout from young Timo Meier is helping a lot too. Still, this team can and should improve more. Whether they will or not could be the difference between a Stanley Cup final appearance or an early playoff exit. The good vibes could start Saturday night in Ottawa.
Considering how grim most people thought this season would be for the Senators, there are definitely some elements to like with puppet general manager Pierre Dorion’s team. Young forward Brady Tkachuk is looking like a Calder Trophy candidate, playing well enough to garner consideration alongside Vancouver wunderkind Elias Pettersson. Fellow pup defenceman Thomas Chabot has had a brilliant campaign to date; the 21-year old is leading the team in assists with 22.
Ottawa ranks fourth in goals for per game, with over 3.5 per. The place where the Senators run aground is the stopping goals department. The Sens ranks 31st, bottom of the league, in both goals against (well over four) and penalty kill effectiveness (just a smidge over 70%). You can’t ship goals that frequently and expect a very solid record. The Senators sit sixth in the Atlantic division, and they could get scored on a few more times versus San Jose.

Free Ottawa Senators vs. San Jose Sharks NHL Prediction:
The Sens’ll doubtlessly be feeling good about shutting out the Rangers, but the San Jose Sharks are a different animal (well, the mascot is an actual animal, taken literally…ok, I’ll stop). Though superstar blueliner Karlsson hasn’t been everything he can be since moving to Silicon Valley, you have to think he’ll be up to play his old team in their arena. I expect the Sharks to handle the Senators on Saturday night in Kanata.
