Ah, yes it’s finally here…..hockey season is back baybay!
Although, it is kind of a strange how the schedule is laid out.
While San Jose and Nashville technically open the NHL regular season in Prague, the rest of the league is still playing preseason hockey back in North America through the 8th. We’ll have to wait until October 11th, for the regular season to begin back in North America. With that being said, lets get back to the match-up on hand.
Both teams will be looking for a statement win across the pond. The Sharks have been floundering the last 3 years while the Predators are coming off a disappointing playoff performance.

San Jose Sharks
The Sharks are coming off another disappointing year that saw them finish 11th last in the league. They barely covered 30 wins overall and averaged less than 3 goals scored per game.
This year, they aren’t projected to do much better with the trade of top D-man Brent Burns to the Carolina Hurricanes. Let’s face it, Erik Karlsson hasn’t lived up to his Senators billing and Marc-Edouard Vlasic isn’t the same Vlasic that made the Olympic team in 2014.
In net, James Reimer is slated to get the start but lets face it, the 34 year-old just isn’t a starter. He’s coming off a 19-17-10 season with a near 3.00 GAA and a save percentage close to .900.
Up front, the lone bright spots were 30 and 35 goal scorers in Tomas Hertl and Timo Meier. Still, neither player could finish with a positive plus/minus on the year.
The main addition the team made was in the form of a trade with today’s opponents back in July. Luke Kunin was added for a pick and a player as the former first rounder is expected to see time on the top line along side Hertl and Meier. That being said, not much was done to improve this club in terms of off-season additions.
That actually might be a good thing, considering the amount of talent in this year’s upcoming draft.
Nashville Predators
After a heart-breaking injury to Juuse Saros at the end of the regular season, the Predators were swept in the opening round of the playoffs by the eventual Stanley Cup Champs. With a renewed focus, Saros and the Predators are looking to take their place among the elite and it all starts with this game.
With their starting netminder healthy and projected to contend for the Vezina, Saros instills confidence into a defence that allowed 3.05 goals against. To help in that respect, they added Ryan McDonagh via trade from the Bolts and he should provide a shutdown presence on the blue line.
Up front, the biggest addition was was Nino Niederreiter who came over on a two-year deal following back-to-back seasons with at least 20 goals. Matt Duchene looked rejuvenated with 43 goals, while Filip Forsberg earned his new deal with his 42 lamp lighters last season.
They should contend for a playoff spot with a defence bound to bounce back from a rough campaign last season.
