San Jose has went on a nice run in December, going 9-4 during the last month of 2016 and shooting up the standings to 1st in the Pacific.
They will face division rivals in Edmonton who sit in 3rd in the Pacific Division in an ever-important four point game.
The Oilers currently sit just one point back of the Sharks and the Anaheim Ducks, who share the same 50 point total ahead of the Oilers’ 49.
San Jose
As mentioned, it was quite the 2016 for the Sharks, having a 9-4 record in December to end the year at the top of the Pacific, a spot they were quite familiar with in 2016.
The Sharks had an excellent 2015-16 season and made it to the Stanley Cup Finals as the West Champs.
They look to reproduce and earn a Cup ring while the current window is open with their veteran core players that are nearing the end of their respective contracts.

The “Joes” once again lead their forwards in point production, seeing captain Joe Pavelski at the top with 37 points in 40 games played this season.
The other Joe, Mr. Thornton, is second amongst Sharks’ forwards with 26 in 40, in his age-37 season.
All-star defenseman, Brent Burns, is having another incredible season and leads all Sharks’ players in points with 39 in 40 games.
He’s netted 15 goals on the year, which ties him with Pavelski for team best, and is making a strong claim for the Norris at the midway point.
Martin Jones was acquired for a second round pick before last season, and it’s proving to be an astute trade by GM Doug Wilson.
Jones has been everything the Sharks hoped for as their starting netminder, and currently owns a 2.22 GAA and a .917 SV% in 35 games this year.
Edmonton Oilers
Connor McDavid continues to lead the NHL in points into 2017, having tallied 48 points in 42 games played. He captains a young team with a tremendously talented core, but none more so than himself.
The runner up in Oilers’ points on the year is third-year center, Leon Draisaitl, who has scored 15 goals and assisted on another 20 for 35 total points.
Draisaitl, along with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins form an excellent 2-3 punch up the middle behind McDavid, and all three are under the age of 23.
The defense appears to be liking life with off-season acquisitions for Adam Larsson and Kris Russell.
The Oilers, with their new additions and implementation of top young picks such as Darnell Nurse and Oscar Kelfbom and pleasant surprise Matthew Benning, now see the team sitting in 12th overall in goals against per game.

That’s not to omit Cam Talbot, the Oilers’ netminder who has been lights out for the young team this year. Talbot owns a 2.44 GAA and a .920 SV% with three shutouts in 2016-17.
He’s handled the bulk of the load for Edmonton, appearing in 37 games thus far.
NHL Betting Trends:
- The Sharks sit 4th overall in goals against per game at 2.3
- San Jose is 10-9-1 on the road
- San Jose has a total goal differential of plus-15 this year

- Edmonton has a total goal differential of plus-7 on the year
Free San Jose Sharks vs. Edmonton Oilers NHL Hockey Prediction:
Both of these teams appear to be well on their way to a playoff seat coming out of the West, but this is a crucial game for the Pacific Division standings.
Both of these two teams have played well on defense, but their best strengths should be on offense over the long run.
I think this turns out into somewhat of a shootout between two teams fighting for the top seed in the Pacific.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Over 5
I’ll take the over, but tease it down to 5 and build in a 3-2 push.
