You wouldn’t have called it at the beginning of this season, but this is all of a sudden a premium NHL match-up on Tuesday night in western New York.
The home team Sabres are the hottest team in the league, winners of nine straight, while the Sharks are among the deepest and most talented outfits. It’s a rock meeting a hard place at KeyBank Arena, and it’ll be fascinating to watch the collision course.
San Jose Sharks
We’ll see how San Jose handles this East Coast road trip, after coming off an embarrassing 6-0 drubbing at the hands of the Vegas Golden Knights in Sin City.
Backup goalie Alex Dell had been playing great, so they went with him for a third straight game against Vegas, where he promptly crapped the bed. It seems likely that lead horse Martin Jones will be in the net versus the Sabres.
Before the Vegas debacle, the Sharks had scored 20 goals in their previous five contests, so there are some good things happening in teal. Timo Meier lighting the lamp, Brent Burns being his Norris-calibre self and new kid on the block Erik Karlsson finally seeing his offensive game waking up are all positive signs.
Veteran and team leader Joe Thornton reaching a new milestone seemingly every night also gives the Sharks a good vibe. They’ll want to rinse that bad Vegas taste out of their mouths, and they have the ability to – even against white-hot Buffalo.
The Sabres can do no wrong right now. Buffalo ranks in the Top 10 in both goals against (5th) and penalty kill percentage (82.6%, also good for 5th) and are getting timely scoring from vets and new faces.
Jeff Skinner has been a godsend for Buffalo since he arrived from Carolina, scoring 18 goals, which is second in the league only to Winnipeg’s Patrik Laine.
The unsung goaltending duo of Carter Hutton and Linus Ullmark has been excellent, both putting up a save percentage around .920 and a GAA around 2.5. That’s more than good enough to get the job done in today’s NHL. Buffalo also has the young guns – in the form of Jack Eichel, this year’s No. 1 overall pick Rasmus Dahlin, and Casey Mittelstadt.
All these elements have combined to vault the Sabres near the top of the Eastern Conference.

Free San Jose Sharks vs. Buffalo Sabres NHL Prediction:
After nine straight Ws, there’s no reason to believe that Buffalo will play poorly, but I just have a feeling that this is where the streak is going to end. San Jose has the horses to end a team’s hot streak.
Buffalo is coming off a gutsy shootout win versus Detroit, and the young upstarts in the Queen City have a target on their backs right now.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Over
Expect a close one, but I anticipate the visiting team – one of the Western Conference’s marquee units, by the way – to come out on top.
