The Penguins roll into Winnipeg Wednesday night for the first game of a six game road trip.
They come in having won their last two, and are gearing up for a stretch run to jockey for position in the Metropolitan division.
As for the Jets, despite the prospects of missing the playoffs for a second straigh season, and for the 5th time in the 6 years they have plenty of reasons to feel good about the future.
The defending Stanley Cup champions have a chance to put their franchise right up there with the Kings and Blackhawks as the winningest teams of the current generation.
A third cup since 2009 would put the Pens ahead of the Kings and on par with the Blackhawks in that regards.
Last time on the ice the Pens rallied back from a 3-0 deficit to beat the Sabres 4-3. They will be looking to start this road trip off with an energetic win.
Things are tight in the loaded Metropolitan division this year, though it is unlikely now that anyone will catch the Caps. The Pens are going to want to play well down the stretch to maintain home ice in the playoffs.
A deciding game 7 in Pittsburgh might be too much for the playoff inexperienced Blue Jackets should we get that matchup first round.
A bad stretch of hockey for the Pens however, could allow the Rangers to leapfrog past them and potentially bump the defending champions into a wild card spot.
The Jets might be trending for another year outside of the playoffs, but its hard for their fans to feel too down. Patrik Laine’s 32 goals this year is just 2 below Crosby’s league leading 34 goals.
Not bad for a rookie. It has to feel good to know that’s the future of your team.
The 6ft 5 205lb 18 year old’s play has far eclipsed Winnipeg’s disappointment at another season outside of the playoffs. The hope he gives them for the future outweighs their immediate concerns for their team.
On Wednesday Laine may want to send a message to Crosby that his time as the face of the league is coming to an end. Crosby better get that 3rd cup soon before the next generation takes over.
The Jets aren’t out of it. They are 3 points back of a playoff spot, though they have played 2 games more than St. Louis. If they want to make a run they still have time, but not for very much longer.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Pens have won 44 of last 58 meetings
- Pens have won 9 of last 15 in Winnipeg
- Jets have dropped 15 of last 17 against Metropolitan
- Pens are 70-27 in last 97 games when favorite
Free Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Winnipeg Jets NHL Hockey Prediction:
The Jets have given up the 4th most goals in the league, and the Penguins have scored the most. Goaltending has continued to be an issue for the Jets and now with Ondrej Pavelec gone for the season, they have even less options available.
That doesn’t bode well for Winnipeg in this match-up.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Penguins -135
I like the Pens to get their road trip off to an energetic start.
