Penguins vs. Capitals Gameday
The Pittsburgh Penguins visit the Washington Capitals on Wednesday, October 7 at Capital One Arena for Washington’s 2026-27 home opener.
Pittsburgh enters 2-1-0 through three games, while Washington is 1-1-0 after opening with consecutive road games. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET on TNT and HBO Max.
Dan Muse’s Penguins opened with a 7-0 demolition of Philadelphia before surviving Montreal 6-5 in overtime. Pittsburgh then carried a 2-0 lead into the third period against Winnipeg before allowing three goals in 4:19 and losing 3-2. Ben Kindel and Declan Carlile each had a goal and an assist in the loss.
Pittsburgh has already played a shutout, a shootout and a blown lead, because apparently October needed variety.
Spencer Carbery’s Capitals split their opening road back-to-back, beating defending champion Carolina 5-2 before losing 3-1 at Tampa Bay.
Wednesday finally puts Washington on home ice. It also brings Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin together again, with the two longtime rivals entering their 22nd NHL season facing one another. Some rivalries get old; apparently these two misplaced the instructions.

Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Washington Capitals Odds & Last 5
Washington opened as a -165 home favorite, with Pittsburgh returning +139 on the moneyline.
The Penguins were +1.5 at -182 on the puck line, while the Capitals were -1.5 at +148. The opening total is 6.5 goals.
Washington won two of three meetings last season, sweeping an April home-and-home set to take the season series. Pittsburgh has still gone 5-2-1 in its last eight visits to Capital One Arena. The history gives both sides something useful to point at, which is usually how rivalry statistics behave.

Capitals Stats
Washington has scored six goals while allowing five through its first two games.
Alex Tuch introduced himself to his new team with two goals against Carolina. Jakob Chychrun added a goal and an assist, while Logan Thompson stopped 31 shots in the victory.
The Capitals weren’t nearly as dangerous the following night in Tampa Bay. Justin Sourdif scored Washington’s only goal, and the offense struggled to create sustained pressure after falling behind early. Charlie Lindgren kept them around with 27 saves on 29 shots before the Lightning added an empty-netter.
Penguins Stats
Pittsburgh has scored 15 goals through three games, with production coming from several parts of the lineup.
Evgeni Malkin had a goal and two assists against Montreal, while Tommy Novak scored twice and added an assist, including the overtime winner. Erik Karlsson also recorded two assists in that victory.
The Penguins have yet to allow a power-play goal this season. That’s an encouraging start for Muse’s penalty kill, although three games is a little early to start engraving trophies for special teams. Hockey has a wonderful way of humbling statistics immediately after somebody gets comfortable with them.
Pittsburgh has found plenty of scoring, but two straight third-period adventures have kept things interesting.
Against Winnipeg, Kindel and Carlile supplied the goals before Pittsburgh’s lead disappeared in the third.
Penguins vs. Capitals Goalie Matchup
Pittsburgh has already used both Arturs Silovs and Sergei Murashov through its first three games.
Silovs opened with a 19-save shutout against Philadelphia before making 20 saves in the overtime win against Montreal. Murashov made his season debut against Winnipeg and stopped 31 shots.
Washington also split its opening back-to-back between its two goalies. Thompson stopped 31 shots in the win over Carolina, while Lindgren turned aside 27 of 29 against Tampa Bay. Both have already given Carbery a solid performance to work with.

No starting goalie for Wednesday’s matchup was officially confirmed in the material available before publication, so neither side gets a made-up certainty here.
Pittsburgh has been perfect on the penalty kill, while Washington’s revamped lineup includes several forwards with established scoring histories. That creates an interesting special-teams battle if the whistles start piling up.
There is plenty of finishing ability on both benches for anyone checking the total at their preferred sportsbooks. Crosby and Malkin remain the familiar names for Pittsburgh, while Washington has added more scoring depth around Ovechkin. The goalies have played well early, but neither one gets a particularly relaxing assignment if this game opens up.
Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Washington Capitals bottom line: both clubs have enough finishers to create problems, and the team that controls the pace should have a major say in how comfortable either crease looks.
Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Washington Capitals Hockey Betting Trends
- Washington has covered the run line in 1 of their last 2 games this season.
- In their last 3 games, Pittsburgh has a straight-up record of 2-1.
- Also, the Capitals have seen the total go over in 1 of their last 2 games this season.
- Last season, the Penguins had a straight-up home record of 23-15-3.
- Additionally, Pittsburgh has hit the over in 2 of their last 3 games this season.
- In their last 2 games, the Capitals have a straight-up record of 1-1.
Penguins Capitals Free Pick: Over 6.5
Here is my Penguins Capitals free pick: Over 6.5.
Seven goals is a decent ask, but I see more than one path there. Pittsburgh can generate offense beyond its top line, while Washington has enough established finishers to punish mistakes in its home opener.
I also don’t need three goals in the first 10 minutes to feel good about this ticket. Both teams have enough skill to turn a normal game into a scoring run quickly, especially once somebody falls behind and starts taking chances. Give me a little special-teams help and things can get noisy in a hurry.
I don’t need chaos from puck drop; I need enough mistakes for all this offensive talent to matter.
Washington being at home matters to the total more than it does to picking a side. I expect the Capitals to push rather than sit around waiting for Pittsburgh to dictate the night.
That’s where I want this game to go. Open ice, a few odd-man rushes and maybe one goalie wondering why everybody in front of him suddenly forgot his job.
I’ve been betting hockey long enough to know an Over 6.5 can look brilliant at 3-2 and completely ridiculous 20 minutes later. That’s part of the charm, if we’re being extremely generous with the word charm.
My NHL betting system gives me enough routes to seven here. I’m on the Over 6.5. We need goals!
