Two of the top teams in the Metropolitan Division will square off in a Wednesday night rivalry game as the Penguins visit the Capitals.
Washington Capitals
*Note: This was written as the Capitals take on the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday evening*
The Capitals made a bit of an odd choice going to Philipp Grubauer in goal on Tuesday against the Jackets and for his second straight start.
Grubauer was beaten up bad at the hands of Carolina, but the logic behind this move seems to be to save Holtby for the Pens.
Check out the free sports picks from Cappers Picks experts today!
Where it’s strange is that, as mentioned, Grubauer starts his second game in a row on Tuesday, meaning Holtby hasn’t actually played since last Friday, making Wednesday’s game with the Pens his first action in five days.
Tough way to come back after that long of a layoff.
The Caps and Pens are always in tight games, and dating back to the start of last season, these teams have met 12 times, with just five goals separating them in that time and the Pens leading the series 8-4, with two of those games going the Pens’ way after regulation time.
Pittsburgh Penguins
The Penguins have shown no signs of a Stanley Cup hangover as they’ve stormed out of the gates in the first month of the season, racing out to a 10-3-2 record and sit second in the Metropolitan Division.
This was done without arguably the best player in the NHL for their first two weeks of the season.
That player is Sidney Crosby (in case you were wondering), and now that he’s back the team is scoring in bunches, thanks largely to Crosby’s 10 goals in nine games.
Matt Murray is another big reason for this team’s success as he’s been spectacular in what has been somewhat limited work.

Murray is 4-0-0 with a 1.25 GAA and .961 SV% but has taken a back seat to Marc Andre Fleury who has started 11 games.
This looks to be a case of the Pens putting Fleury on display for a potential trade partner as Murray a just 22 looks like the number one guy in the future.

Free Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Washington Capitals NHL Hockey Prediction:
Caps were absolutely brutal in the back half of back to backs last time out, getting waxed 5-1 by the lowly Hurricanes. This won’t be any easier.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Penguins
Pittsburgh and Washington play a lot of close games, but the Pens have been on the happy side of the majority of them. I like this one to be close, with Pittsburgh edging it out.
