With 17 games left to go the Pittsburgh Penguins could win the President’s Cup this season, yet it’s also still possible they head into the playoffs as a wild card.
The Canucks meanwhile aren’t out of the playoff race, but they aren’t really in it either. If they go on a run they have a chance, but they better start that pretty soon.
Pittsburgh Penguins
Sidney Crosby really only has one thing left to accomplish in hockey: turning the Penguins into a dynasty. They’ve won cups in 2009 and 2016, if you throw in a successful Stanley Cup defence in 2017, that could be considered a dynasty, despite the gap between 09-16.
The Pens sit 5 games back for the Capitals in the President’s Cup trophy race, with one game in hand.

They are tied with the Blue Jackets for the 2 and 3 Metropolitan seeds, but the Rangers are only 2 back of them, albeit having played 3 more games.
22 year old Matt Murray walked into the NHL, took the starting goalie spot on one of the best teams in hockey and won a Stanley Cup, all in a span of a few months last season. He’s been great this season too, and is sporting a .923 save percentage.
Crosby is currently on pace to win his second ever Art Ross, having netted 34 goals so far this year.
Vancouver Canucks
The Canucks could go on a run and get themselves back into the playoff picture, but at the moment they are a little too far back to be considered in the hunt.
They are 6 back of St. Louis for the final wild card spot, but they’ve played 2 more games as well.
This is a franchise that still hasn’t won a playoff series since they lost a game 7 Stanley Cup final to the Bruins in 2011.
Though it’s basically only the Sedin’s who remain from that team.

A bright spot for the Canucks this year has been the play of 21-year old Bo Horvat, who’s already crossed the 20 goal mark for the first time in his career.
The Canucks come into this one having lost Thursday night to the Islanders in OT. A late goal inside of 20 seconds remaining by Troy Stecher got the Canucks one badly needed point, but they failed to pick up the other in OT.
